Seth = Bloody Stupid Johnson
At times I wonder if the Discworld character Bloody Stupid Johnson taught Seth how to program games. I mean look at the mess that the Dink.ini file is and the pathetic hardness of most sprites. I mean why bother if you're gonna make them so small or put it where it is less likely to be hard? There is just no logic to some of things he does. Don't get me wrong I love playing the game, but when it comes to developing for it, the fun goes down a lot because the bugs in the engine become more obvious at this stage.
Don`t insult, if you are so mad about the hardness file and dink ini, why don`t you create a better one?
Glenn's right. The game is, what, 7 and a half years old now? And, Seth was pushing for a release date - he had to skimp on some things. So, make a better one. Then you can say how much it sucks all you want.
I think redink1's Hard.dat write might the answer to your she-dogging...
Agree, it's 7 years old so don't complain! It's Christmas be happy

I think DraconicDink has every right to complain. I mean, he can obviously do so much better. That's why his own softco, "EgoCorp", is making such brilliantly coded games nowadays.
Doesn't fix every hardness problem as far as I'm concerned...
Hey! I',m not saying I could do better! I know I could do no better. It's just that a true game expert like those that work for big gaming companies like Squaresoft, EA Games, Nintendo, Microsoft and Enix would never let those sort of bugs slip through and that since Seth did things quite a differently, he is no where near as good as them. And don't give me that "the game is 7 years old" crap. Even other games from 1997 didn't have those bugs. Example: Squaresoft's Final Fantasy VII. Did it have hardness bugs? Not that I recall.
I'd like to see the *one* guy who coded final fantasy 7. Just because someone does things differently, doesn't mean that they are doing something wrong, it just means it's different. Each way has it's advantages and disadvantages.
Yeah, but unlike Squaresoft, Nintendo, and the pure, concentrated evil that is Microsoft and EA, Seth had a team of about 3 people, with only himself doing the programming. I'd like to see three people from those companies actually get a decent game and editor together in the time that Seth did using tools only available in 1997.
Bloody deadlines. Deadlines suck. So many bad games could be good and good games really good if there were no deadlines. It's the same with Dink- the original game would be much better if they had not rushed it's release.
You took the words right out of my mouth. I'm fine with that, but I'd appreciate it if you at least returned my dentures.
It was also Seths' first project! We take comfort it the fact that he expressed some shame in its' coding. Its still a great learning platform for us though

Um, you aren't you forgetting LORD? But thats okay, we all forgot LORD.
Sorry DraconicDink, but they all have valid points....until you fix it yourself, im sick of hearing you complain. Any programmer team of three would struggle on a tight deadline, as the others have said. But Saber, you have been abit harsh I think, come on, he might be wrong or he might be...whatever, but you dont need to be like that.
l Fantasy I done a better job of hardness and it had just Huronibu Sakaguchi and a few programmers. And at the time Squaresoft were pretty much literally bankrupt. In fact they had even filed for bankrupcy.
Oh and folks I would like to clarify that while meant what I said it was a bit a light hearted remark
Maybe I was harsh, maybe I wasn't. I'm just getting tired of the "Seth's programming is crap", "I'm going to write a tutorial d-mod and rewrite the .INI" and "I'm so fudgeing original" stuff.
And if you are going to make a light-hearted remark that criticises something... please make it obvious, with the use of a smiley or something.
I make no pretence to be good with DinkC, and maybe Draconic is a great scripter, and has the "language" completely worked out. But until I see proof, I'm a little bit sceptical about any tutorials he may make. Sorry, but it's true.
And if you'd been about a bit longer, you would know I'm prone to being an arse.

Ok I will admit that I didn't make it clear enough that I was being light hearted... which is why I clarified it. Sorry folks I'll admit I got that wrong.
Oh and I admit I still have a lot to learn when it comes to scripting which is why I think my tutorial dmod will take at least six months to be ready for release.Pretty rediculously long for something so small and comparitevely simple hah? (When compared to a proper dmod.)
And to be honest I only mentioned them in the first place because I thought people might appreciate them, but since noone seems interested right now I have decided to drop it for the time being. The lack of intrest doesn't worry me at all because I can still use them, meaning I won't be wasting my effort in making them since anything that can make a hard process easier for me is well worth the effort.

I assume you're talking about Final Fantasy 1. You're comparing apples to oranges... while Dink allows per-pixel movement, FF1 is limited to block-movement.
Okay people. I have had enough of this discussion, so I won't be reading it anymore.
So someone proves you wrong and you can't take it? Very nice.
