Recondite Twenty-Two: Eruption of Chaos
Recondite is my article, and is supposed to be weekly (though it is never released on a schedule, and is nowhere near weekly anymore) and is usually a whole lot of crazy rants, stories, poll comments, frequently asked questions, and links.
This week I delve into a whole lot of poll comments, people who deny others their legacy, the wild deletion spree of 2003, dinksmallwood.net, and more! So read it. Or, if you're sane, don't.

The following are the best poll comments, in my extremely subjective and biased opinion. Due to the *huge* number of polls, I only picked the top 3 instead of the top 5.

Unknown Legacy
Dethlord e-mailed me about a month ago. He requested that all of his reviews be deleted, all of his files be deleted, and his account deleted. I reply, saying that while I could delete all of his reviews in a single line of code, he can delete them himself from the Reviews section of Account. I also said I needed him to reply to this e-mail in order for his files to be deleted, in case of a notorious e-mail spoofer actually sent the e-mail. And I informed him that account deletion was impossible; it never happens, because of linked database files and such.
Oh, and I tacked on (actual quote): "I personally hate it when anyone feels that once they leave a community, everything they did must suddenly disappear in a puff of smoke and be unavailable to benefit anyone else in the future."
He didn't reply. I thought my mission was accomplished; Dethlord's reviews and files would remain on TDN to benefit others, while he could live happily ever after without caring a bit about some silly computer game called Dink Smallwood.
Unfortunately, it was not to be. Yesterday he went through all 189 of his reviews, modifying them with 'delete this review'. I hope it took him an awful long time to do this. He also replied to my e-mail, so now I have to delete all of his files. My memory seems a bit fuzzy, because I remember him releasing more files than two midi packs and his desert tiles... ah well. But those will be gone tomorrow, anyway.
Here's the thing: I can understand it when some people want their files annihilated. Like scratcher. He wanted all of his files deleted except Graphics Numbers, because he was planning on either making new or improved versions of them. A noble goal, even if it was a tad permanent solution. But I could understand the logic behind it.
I cannot understand the logic behind Dethlord's exodus. Ok, I can a little bit. With the files: his e-mail address is probably in a readme file, so he could theoretically be bugged by Dink fans. But I truly cannot understand his wish to remove all of his reviews. Why? Why? Why?
It pisses me off.

How do you make a D-Mod?
I still can't understand why people still ask this question. It isn't like there is a short response that works; creating a D-Mod is a long and involved process that takes a lot of luck, time, work, typing, etc.
The best answer is to not answer, in my humble opinion. If someone really wants to make a D-Mod, they'll end up reading the readme.txt that was included with Dink Smallwood and see that you're supposed to read the tutorials and such in the /develop directory. While the included tutorials are far from perfect, they get you started on the road to D-Mod development, and then you can ask specific questions on the board when you're stuck. If someone wants to make a D-Mod, but can't figure out to read the readme.txt and go through the tutorials on their own, then they probably don't have the sheer will required to see it through to the end.
Why do you use FilePlanet?
It's free. It's free. It's free. It's free. It doesn't get any more complicated than that. As it is, TDN isn't raking in the dough in Donations or the Store (which has been closed, though it might re-open in the near future). Yeah, we've made enough to mirror the larger D-Mods (but for how long?) and to sponsor some contests and such, but not nearly enough to mirror all files.
Can I use your FilePlanet ID?
No. It isn't that difficult to sign up for your own.

Your D-Mod idea could be good. But the original idea is pretty worthless part of the process, in my humble opinion. I mean, its sort of important (your D-Mod has to be about *something*, after all, though a 'nothing' D-Mod ala Seinfield could be interesting), but almost any single D-Mod idea can turn into a great D-Mod. You could make a D-Mod about Dink as he has to find the King some cheese... and as the Quest for Cheese proved, it made a great D-Mod, even with the lamest of ideas.
Also, people who aren't experienced with D-Mods might tend to think in terms of 'this would be soo cool!' instead of 'hey, I can actually do this'. So, an idea might have Dink travel to the Moon and slaughter space aliens. And hey, that sounds like a nice idea. But then you have to think of how you're going to do it... you'd need to make the space alien graphics, make the moon graphics (probably including some tiles, moon rocks, and maybe some craters) and so on. And then your neat idea becomes a hard-to-accomplish idea.

Well that was interesting reading... Dethlord deleted his reviews (cue angels singing and harps playing as the world rights itself again). He has gone - oh well nothing lasts forever - even sh*t stops smelling after a couple of weeks, eventually dries up and gets blown away. Dum de dum de dum

He said a while ago he wanted to do that and I said he shouldn't, since he made DN history with his reviews (the most, the first one who made 100 and so forth) and I thought he wouldn't do it. It's a shame he actually did it and I don't understand it either.

Actually , Recondite 22 was so funny I laughed so hard I almost chked to death (eating my veggie's). So I guess I really have to go into overdrive in reviewing files now?? BTW I am not a true Geek, as the test was not made for an old lady.....lol

To be perfectly honest, I thought most of his reviews were pretty lame anyway. Some of them even included info on himself and what number review it was. I think any review I ever read from him said "use a cheat" to get beyond certain areas. I'm not ripping him, but most of the reviews stunk, some were personally motivated on score, and not one of them was writen for the community - they were all written to feed his ego...my 2 stinkin' cents.
I didn't remember most of them being like that... I thought it was only like 10-25%.
There are other reviewers besides DethLord who put in personal info or give the number of review it is... or tell to use a cheat. And as far as ego goes.... I started writing reviews to learn something new, now it's fun doing. So that's also for my own pleasure. Sure, the community profits (I hope! ) but so did I. And I don't think anyone writes a review if he hates to write reviews just for his ego. I don't want to alter your opinion, but that's mine.

I have to say, that recondite was very good indeed!
I've spoken to Dethlord, and I think his main reasons were that he has evolved into a super being who no longer has a need for Dink, and therefore didn't want to taint himself with his the shameful past he has...that of Dink.
I might be wrong though.
