The Dink Network

If TDN disappeared...

How would it affect you? Where would you go from this forum?

For me, I would probably just start being more active on some other forum that I lurk, but don't post that much on currently. I might seek out an entirely new game creation/modding place... not sure. The Dink community fills some kind of weird little niche for me, and while I've dabbled with many other things, it's just not the same.

Other than that, I probably wouldn't mind too much. Dink Network is like an old family pet; it's lived a full life, and you know it's going to die one day, so when it finally does croak, it doesn't feel so bad.

...Not that I expect TDN to suddenly disappear. It's likely going to slow down more and more for years on yet, until eventually it's as good as dead- and that's perfectly fine. Until then, keep working on those goddang dmods, I want to play something.

Playstation 4 > D-modding. I'm sorry! T_T

If TDN dissapeared, I lose the only place where I care to make a game.

Well, if it went away I'd have to give up on the DMOD I'm making for lack of an audience (not to mention for lack of the scripting help I've gotten on the forum, without which I'd have had to give up on several things by now). That'd be a bummer. Then again, I still have no idea how people will react to my mod when I release it...

I do think there's something special about this place... I hadn't been a regular since 2000, but I wasn't surprised to find there was still activity here.

Oh, NOW YOU'VE DONE IT!
I don't think we can predict an exodus. Nobody expected Dink HD to be released, nor did anyone think Cocomonkey and Bill would come back. Surprises like that mean that things will keep ticking over for a while yet.

I think I have already slowed my visits here - sick of the behaviour of the few I guess, one in particular has made this forum almost distasteful to me so its somewhere I dont come to as much. I think i would be a lot more active, still making sprites and stuff (because its a passion with me) but due solely to the prolonged crud that was dished my way, i have sadly developed a 'whatever' attitude to most things Dink.

I do have a 3/4 finished dmod I would like to get out with a neat little thing scripted by Rabid for it - I would complete this so his awesomeness is displayed for all to wow over heh, and I still intend to complete the "starter Dmod" i have about 1/2 done, but the others... hmm well we will see. For now I lack the impetus to just doo eettt.

I dont see this forum dying suddenly and you seem to agree scratchy one - but I see it being a different kind of hangout than it was when I started coming here. People were friendly, welcoming, seriously helpful, kind and fun to be around - the current evolution of this forum just doesn't do it for me sorry. It is evolving into something that excludes me because i dont care to read 90% of the topics these days so, maybe at '97' it is time for me to just roll over and park it somewhere heh. All in all this saddens me because Dink has been very special to me.

So yeah - another forum and community is winning at the moment....

I'd find some other forum to hang around on, maybe Chaos Theatre, which is a bit like TDN.

I just wanted to say that I like your sprites, MsDink, particularly the "shady stranger," which'll be in my DMOD.

Thirded, though I find that if you ignore the off-topic board, it's surprisingly workable.

You can even mangle a url to do that for you.

For those avoiding the place because not enough meaningful posts by respected people are made... Notice the vicious circle guys

Not saying I don't understand the attitude, but for one there's scripts out there to fix your problems with the site. I use such a script, I'm happy here again. Just get over your aversion of using a script and come back That, or don't use the trash posts as an excuse for your abscence

I came off harsher than I wanted too I'm just sad to see people say these things when we could make it better together. And now that last part sounded corny. Nice.

As for me, I would lose a haven for my creativity if the TDN disappeared.

Never be afraid to ask, but don't demand an answer

This is a point. Ignoring the junk doesn't mean there are more good posts on the board. I'm not complaining about the amount, but I can see how others do. Ignoring helps to improve the ratio of good posts you see, but not the absolute amount.

So I have a question. I'm working on a dmod, as I've implied in some posts. Of course it will be awesome. I don't want to talk much about it, because I don't want to disappoint people if I don't finish it. I also don't want to spoil too much; actually almost nothing. But is that a bad idea? I like it when people talk about their dmod progress; so perhaps I should talk about mine as well?

But I recently ran into an issue, and made a post about it because I like it when people talk about these things. So I was hoping to trigger others to post similar experiences. Does anyone agree that such posts are helpful for keeping the place interesting?

I'm not ready for TDN to disappear until at least after I have finished my DMOD and some people have played it. And not to mention other people's DMOD's that haven't been made I still want to see in action.

So I have a question. I'm working on a dmod, as I've implied in some posts. Of course it will be awesome. I don't want to talk much about it, because I don't want to disappoint people if I don't finish it. I also don't want to spoil too much; actually almost nothing. But is that a bad idea? I am kind of the same way, I don't want to reveal anything about my DMOD right now. However, once I get to the point where my DMOD is closing in on the finish line, I will probably make a topic for it. I just don't see the point to make one now when the release is not quite in sight yet, basically for the same reasons you mention, but also because I want the pace from it's reveal to its release to be close enough that everyone doesn't forget about it or lose interest. My opinion: go all or nothing on revealing information about your DMOD before it's almost finished. Either talk about it quite a lot, keeping people up to date consistently to keep people excited for a long time, or reveal basically nothing until you reach a comfortable late point in development so that you can get people excited soon before release. It just depends on your consistency on working on the DMOD, how well you can keep people interested in your DMOD for the time you would expect to take to release it, and personal preference.

But I recently ran into an issue, and made a post about it because I like it when people talk about these things. So I was hoping to trigger others to post similar experiences. Does anyone agree that such posts are helpful for keeping the place interesting?

Definitely. Learning something new about Dink or just having a nice haven to discuss unusual things about Dink always feels good. If I didn't feel the same way I wouldn't have bothered making a topic about stop_entire_game() screwing with trimmed background sprites, even including a screenshot from my DMOD. More than likely, that's the most that will be seen of it for some months.

It would leave quite a big hole for me, for several reasons.

I'm not a member of many other forums and even those couple I'm not exactly very active on. It feels like I know everyone here - it's home

I pop in pretty much every day, even though I haven't been posting much recently (partly because I've been so busy and partly to do with what those above have been saying...).

Dink is also what got me more interested in programming. I'd always been interested in computers in general but learning DinkC really gave me the impetus to take it further.

It would also be sad if TDN disappeared as there'd be no real reason to continue with my D-Mod then. Yeah yeah I know I haven't done anything in 2 years... that's beside the point
Been burning to continue with it recently.

There's another forum I'm far more active on and have been for 5 years +.

I'd be sad to see the DN go. Though it might be cathartic in a way. I only come back to see how you all are, I don't really have anything left to contribute to the community. But Dink has given me an enormous amount of creative satisfaction over the years and to see this site vanish would be a day for tears.

Love! True love!
I'd be pretty sad. Attempts would be made on my part to remain in contact with some people. I would maintain most of my connection through IRC, Facebook, and Skype. Dink Smallwood is a heavy nostalgia trigger for me, and I would hate to see it go. Knowing that there's still a group of people that are together because of it is comforting.

You mean "Dink is dying?" I hoped this one was a little bit different, but yeah, that's probably the number one recurring topic on the forum. It's a wonder the place hasn't collapsed yet from the weight of all the ennui alone.

I think Dink has died thousands of times by now. And he'll just keep on dying.

And then he respawns, only to die again. Or get laid. Depends on the D-mod.
