I hate religion who else does
Who else hates religion?

Before you decide to hate something, at least see what is it all about. A lot of people today hate it, because modern TV (movies, series, etc) usually present it as a bad thing. The truth is, that religion was used for some political achievements earlier, but then again, what wasn't?
Sadly, today most people forget that religion had a great impact on philosophy, art, and science.

Mods, please don't close this. I think it could be a good discusion.
Like Tooth, I want to know why you hate religion, Pred. Have you had a bad encounter with religious people? There are things which you might like about religion. Religion disapproves porn, pre-marital sex etc etc... Which you also hate.

I hold animosity towards it for the power it holds.
I like some of it. Then some of it makes me roll my eyes or make other expressions of disbelief and disgust.
The parts I like are the ones that inspire people to be as good as they can be. Some kinds of religion embody the best ideals of humanity.

I love you so much, Predisher. Your undying hate towards everything... it is so much fun for me.
I obviously don't. I may dislike some religions (And certainly certain cults), but I don't go out of my way to hate on them. In fact, one of my philosophies is 'Speak your religion, and I will listen. But I will not speak mine if you are unwilling to listen.'
You personally see evidence of this in our more later discussions, and I only use religion as an example when you bring that particular subject up.
I know you don't want to hear of religion, or have a discussion where the other person uses religion as an answer all of the time, so I try to use logic, something you hold up higher than religion.
Some people may think me insane for partaking in your various hate-filled rants, but even you admitted once that I had a point on a specific subject.

Religion is a superb invention, embodying the highest and lowest points of art and humanity, addressing our greatest fears and hopes in a delightfully frail, subjective manner. It is the zenith of freedom and idealism, one of the few areas of mystery that prevents science from sending us all of the deep end of pessimistic depression at our pointless existence.
Religion is one of the greatest testaments to our unique evolution and it continues to evolve with us.

I don't buy everything religions say, but how is living for 900 years illogical? There could be numerous scientifical explanations for that, which we haven't yet discovered.
They may've been cyborgs with a top notch life support system.
The batteries ran out 900 years later.

All that is written should not be taken literally. It's all a giant metaphor. As I said, phylosophy.
But i dont need religion
and a made up god to tell
me whats right and wrong
i decide my own fate.
In Atheism, a person can be who he wants to be. Can drink, eat whatever he wants etc. It is not necessary that the person does the right thing. Of course I do not mean to generalise. Religion puts a restriction to those things. (Well, Abrahamic religions do) It sets people straight from birth. Although, not always. And sometimes a bit too much.

It'd be a lot less hassle to just ask him, "Are you high?"
Of course, you're right duckhater. Presumably most third-world societies are less evolved, more like rats then anything.
Since we Anglo-saxons have evolved the fastest, it would please me to own India. I decide my own fate. Riiiiiight.
Wake up son, the world isn't black and white; be thankful that many of us see the inherent flaws in atheistic thought and stand by Abrahamic ideologies. If we didn't, there would be a lot more pain and death in the world then there is.

Taken from the 'Real Life' section for the trope, 'Fridge Horror'.
'You may think you're cool for telling someone on the internet how wrong their beliefs are, or how dumb their ideas sound. Well, some people have thicker shells, and know not to take you seriously. Others? It's emotional and psychological hellfire, and their confidence withers away until they aren't as joyful as they used to be. Any attempt at regaining the joy of what they used to do will instantly remind them of you and your comments, and they'll back away because they're afraid of being hurt again.'
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/FridgeHorror/RealLife is where you can find this. A lot of it is pretty interesting, though if you're unable to take certain things in stride...

Are you High? High on common sense yes unlike you DD
Why do so many common people come on this site nowadays?
@Schnapper's comments on ideals. Atheism does not remove ideals (Or morals), it simply allows you to hold your OWN morals as opposed to those of any particular faith. Some 'morals' of faith are awful, such as opposition of homosexuality, but others, like killing each other, are logical and good for society as a whole.
I dont believe in any religion that has anything to do with politics, war, or hitler (I.E the catholics). theres actually a picture of the pope shaking hands with hitler... yeah... i also dont buy into any religion whose roots are obviously pagan. and the occult is just plain bad... As far as the trinity goes... well ive come to believe that the trinity was born from someones misunderstanding of the bible... i mean how can JESUS CHRIST and GOD be the same person when theres so many scriptures that speak of them as two differant individuals, not to mention the fact that jesus is gods SON for fierferks sake.
The idea of the Trinity is that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are three different persons, but they all share the same being. Don't ask me how that works. Nobody knows. They call it a mystery. But they get it from the fact that the Bible describes all three as having divine traits, yet it still says there's only one God.
Let's say that Jesus is God incarnate, essentially God's Avatar.
The Holy Spirit is the presence of God that a person can feel.
God the Father (I.E. God as he was at the very beginning) is a literal meaning of God being the father of man and beast, as well as the rest of the world.
Makes sense?

yeah... nope... nothing against what any of you guys believe. but i personally think its pretty stupid... no offence. just speakin my mind here.
It should be fairly obvious to anyone, even to atheists, that at one stage a super-matter existed. I call it God. Atheists try not to think about it (And fair enough, too. As the great Nietzsche said: why should we have to justify our beliefs to anyone except ourselves?). Anyhow, as I understand it, this super-matter is the forerunner of everything else that exists. At some point this super-matter started to asexually reproduce - the first thing out was "The First Begotten Son." Well, you know, outside of the confines of time and space it could've been anything, even a raptor or flying meatball.
What's funny is that I recently read an article that was actually well thought out and sensible, which explained that Jesus was, in fact, Lucifer. Now I don't believe that, but it's not any worse of a theory than most mainstream religious theories these days. Actually, it's better.
Just ordinary matter until it gets to a phone booth.
Probably a raptor or flying meatball.
There's nothing in the New Testament (or OT for that matter) about Trinity - that concept was invented way after the Bible was written... about 350-400 years after Jesus had died. It's bollocks, I think there are way much more interesting topics to think about within Christianity. Trinity seems to me just like some random explanation pulled out of a hat that the church must've needed at that point of its history to have its say in the discussion on the nature of God.
I think you may need to go back and read the book
That's not quite true-
Matthew 28:19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit NIV
But it's not in Mark or Luke and may have been added long after the first century. There's some other more subtle verses that support [or inspired] the trinity, and the plural term used for God in Genesis which I think has been discussed here before.
There's a lot more to it than that of course. But I was interested in this issue a while ago [actually a long time ago..] and concluded that both trinity vs no-trinity beliefs are compatible with the Bible [and that, as you say, the idea of a trinity came later]

Well if the original post was serious, I would be delighted if you could entertain me with an elaboration because it sounds like an argument I've never come across before. However I have no idea what a supermatter is. I also cannot conceptualise how a supermatter exists at one "stage" and is a "forerunner" and yet is outside time, because these terms imply a time sequence in my mind. I'm not trying to be contentious, I just have honestly no clue has to parse your earlier post.
I think Synbi meant this day's concept of the Trinity. Not the mention about it.
I hate the amount of anti-religion sentiment in the world right now.
Considering all the stupid crap that's been done and is being done in the name of religion, I think there's a fair bit of justification in that sentiment.

Punisher, this is a small community where everyone has already made their views on everything you've ever posted about clear, so go make the same topic ten times in a community where there are actually more than five people who are going to reply. We've already told you what we think.
15 actually 14 if you wanna leave pred out.
Hey... this thread is going pretty well! I'm proud of us for keeping a religious thread civilized this long!
Should have been gone a long time ago.
Wait, you're saying THIS was uncivilized?
Edit: After re-reading the entire linked thread, I discovered the existence of the Dead Dragon Carcass Cult.
You want Uncivilized?

Seems to me that humans cause more problems then religions. Maybe we should throw out the baby with the bathwater?

I believe you're re-framing my argument in a way that I never implied. I don't believe that all religion is bad (though I have a very low opinion of most organized forms). When religion is used as a shield for bigotry and violence, people have a legitimate reason to be angry with it and point out the negatives that come from it.
I fully agree. You can be religious, that's fine, just don't shove it in our faces or do crazy shoot because of it.
Striker: some call it re-framing. Others call it revisionism
Well said, Absol.
In other news, we may well identify media, the law and commercial interest as iron curtains behind which atrocities are committed on a mass scale. All these things have been used as vehicles of inhumanity and tyranny, but all these things have many good aspects too.
In the words of Zoltan: "Progress is like a herd of pigs. The herd brings many benefits, but no one should wonder at the all the shoot."
