That's not quite true-
Matthew 28:19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit NIV
But it's not in Mark or Luke and may have been added long after the first century. There's some other more subtle verses that support [or inspired] the trinity, and the plural term used for God in Genesis which I think has been discussed here before.
There's a lot more to it than that of course. But I was interested in this issue a while ago [actually a long time ago..] and concluded that both trinity vs no-trinity beliefs are compatible with the Bible [and that, as you say, the idea of a trinity came later]
