The Icey Article #1 - Network Nubness
Ehem... over the past few months The Dink Network has been becoming more and more of a popular Network for RPG Gaming fans. The game has become more widely known and slowly more and more D-MODS (The Dink Smallwood Addon Quests and Adventures) are being released, some at a very high quality. Every time somebody releases a file to the Dink Network, they are doing it in aid of the community, to keep it alive, to let the Network live on.
Recently, due to the Dink Network's sucess, many new Dinkers have joined the Network and come to The Dink Network on a regular basis. This is absolutely outstanding and great to see how well Dink is coming along and how the Network is developing.
There are however, some small problems that over time will cause something "O.T.T" to happen. I'm talking about 'Network Nubness', the happenings that are caused when a new member thinks he knows best, there are of course other reasons but let's focus on this.
Let's say you still haven't a clue what I'm talking about. Well let me give you an example. Let us, for the sake of heaven and earth bring a fake member, under the alias "Higgy" into the Network. (No we're not doing this, it's an example of explanation). "Higgy" downloads Dink, is amazed as usual and decides to try and write his own D-MOD. He doesn't get too far so he goes on the board for some help...
-----------------------------------
"Higgy - I've played the game and completed it and it's amazing and all that and now I'm trying to write my own game and I've got stuck. Could anyone lend a hand?"
-----------------------------------
Which is a perfectly acceptable post. So then a member, say it's Redink replies with a
-----------------------------------
"Redink - It'd help if you told us what you need"
-----------------------------------
Once again, a perfectly acceptable post. But then, our fake member Higgy goes and says...
-----------------------------------
"Higgy - Ex-c-USE me!! Sorry for being so RUDE mr WISE GUY. I only needed some HELP! And THIS is what I get! WELL I've played Dink since 1999! ( Lies ) and I happen to be a great Dinker! I WONT ask for help next time!
-----------------------------------
Which is, blatently obvious that this guy is a completly new member giving the facts that he's broken some Network regulations and hasn't posted before.
This is only an example of Network Nubness but many people are getting more and more irratating every post they make. You might just think I'm here posting poop so if it's that case then
HERE are some EXAMPLES
Now to finish this post on a rather blunt note as it's Blatently (I love that word) getting too long.
Noobs. Before you post check STAFF and think about what you're posting. Be kind, we're a friendly community, we'll want to keep it that way
Thanks

I think you should write more articles. Just make sure they don't end up like my "Current Events"
I'll take that as a compliment, WC. Thanks. I've got a lot of stuff on my mind about the Dink Network. It's getting kinda late so I really can't write much now but, yeah. If this has affected anyone in anyway please call 911 (US) or 999 (UK) and ask for the IceMan
Not being a n00b, and having watched other n00b's over the years trash the other board and this one with their insensitive remarks and their just plain rude/crude behaviour; it's interesting to see how one of the worse of them, has the *gall* to chastise the new n00b's. Everyone grows up sometime, Morpheus and in the process learns what is right and what is wrong, and when to talk and when to keep your opinions to yourself. Because we all remember, being there and we all remember getting second chances (some third, fourth and many more). What's the old saying about "throwing rocks at glass houses?"
>^..^<
>^..^<
"He who lives in a glass house should not throw stones."
But really... when you look at and compare Jaime's behavior now to how he acted half a year ago, I'd definitely say that he's not the same annoying n00b he used to be. So, while he may not seem like the most qualified person to be posting this, you have to admit he makes some good points, and he's acting a great deal more mature than I ever thought him capable of seven or eight months ago.
Um... I had a point. Really, I did.
Oh, now I remember. Just because he (may or may not be) a n00b, that doesn't invalidate his point.

Yes, Alli and thank you btw, as I always get my *sayings* mixed up. That was my point, although Jamie's behavoir over the past few months has been let me say"more mature" it does not qualify him in any matter about the way he trashes the new n00b's. Besides you can't make *silk out of a pig's ear* (something like that, I am sure Alli will correct me ) and 6 months ago when Jamie was acting like an immature brat on the board, with good old WC yelling at him all the time, I myself still wonder: what has brought around this miraculous change? He may make a few good points, BUT that is no reason to call the "kettle black".
>^..^<
>^..^<
Well I guess you should hold your own opinions about that. I do happen to know that I've changed, everybody changes. It's change that people sometimes can't accept.
"trashes the new n00b's"
If you read my post I'm giving the n00bs advice. I'm explaining to them the main guidlines and stuff they should do to prevent themselves from being disliked... like I was... once
Showing n00bs the right way seemed the right thing to do, and it wouldn't be any better if I didn't post as they'd continue their immaturity.

I think most of the members understand this stuff.it's nice to have someone to hate and yell at...
Obviously not as we're still getting these incidents very frequently
Maybe you've changed, but a complete 180 degrees? And I see you gave us examples of 2 n00b's who do sprout off about sometimes "weird things". I just ignore it (as I have done with you in the past) and go on to the next, they will learn as you have learned (probably the hard way too), that everyone has an opinion, whether or not it makes sense or not, or it is just plain stupid; then they will *mature* as you did. (Can't think of a good quote here..maybe Alli can help me )

I have often though of spending to money to fly to england and kick the crap out of jamie, sure, we all have. But I have spoken to him the last few weeks, and he has grown up alot, in fact, in a previous post, I told everyone that Jamie needs to be given another chance and anyone who hold his past against him by posting on this board will have their posts deleted.
I'm just wondering, what makes you a newbie? Is it how long you've played, how good you are, your maturity level, how good you are at scripting, or how new you are to the "Dink Network"?
Well as my grandma always said: "If you can't say nothing nice, say nothing at all."
>^..^<
>^..^<
How good you are (at scripting) has nothing to do with it. Maturity level is only considered a point when it comes to being unpolite, but it has nothing to do with being a newbie or not. If you haven't played any D-mod yet, you're considered a newbie, and also if you just started posting on the board.
You'll become an 'oldie' if you've been around for some time and have shown you're face on a somewhat regular basis. I has nothing to do with releasing files and/or writing reviews. Some Dinkers haven't released anything, and are still beloved members.

A newbie is someone who's new to something, could be compared to rookie or beginner, but if you're a n00b (degrading way of saying newbie) you're acting immature, spamming the board, swearing, flaming people and yeah.. act like a jerk. And you don't need to be new to something to act like a n00b.

!! WC's a n00b!
!! WC's a n00b!
I think you lose n00b status when you are approved by most people of a community. When the "in" crowd approve of you, in a sense.
*Looks in the same direction... Keeps his opinions to himself*
I think the "generally accepted by the 'in' crowd" explanation is pretty good, but I also wonder...who would qualify as an old timer? Some are obvious (Redink, Jveenhof) but many are not.
Do you qualify as an "old wise bird of the DN" once you have been here for a year? 2 years? After you have released an acclaimed d-mod or development file? Or just being active and known by all but n00b's. I would see myself as being fairly old, though I have only been about for a bit over a year. Hmmm....

Anyone that isn't classed as a n00b Generally people that have been here more than a month or two
but has anyone sayd to someone-straight : "YOU ARE A N00B!!"
maybe,atleast i didn't see so.
Old timers after being here a month or 2?? So you would include RustedSorow, Ducklord, and Kory as old timers?!?!
ThE WUrLd HaS GOne mAD!!
ThE WUrLd HaS GOne mAD!!
All (some stop earlier) People stop being n00bs in a year, but to be an old-timer you gotta be 3+ years in the dink network.
So you're saying that I'll become an old-timer by September this year?
Yes Phoenix , so break out your cane
>^..^<
>^..^<
I think some of the old timers are going a bit senile...guess which ones (and no, the staff are not senile, they are just...*FILL IN THE BLANK*)
