Xanthos's Profile
I'm 18 and live in Southern California. Been in the Dink community since the beginning... yes, yes, the beginning, bought a disc on the second burn. Been loving coming around every few months for a month to see how its going, getting bored but always coming back (you know how it is). I'm working on a dmod just like everyone and hopefully it'll get released one day.
Here is my background in the Dink community. My brother (now known as Illumini, formerly Vigilante) and I (formerly known as Johny a long time ago) have been members of the Dink community from the beginning. We bought a Dink CD in the first burn from RTSoft.
After playing through the first dmods that came out and taking a break from dink for a year we wanted to return to the community with a small but good dmod. The original Saga was thought up by me and my brother in the winter of 1999. It was going to be a progressively episodic dmod series that was going to be released in chapters once a month. After much planning we released the first empisode in March of 2000. The idea of more episodes never came through because me and my brother moved and lost interest in Dink for another few months.
The first chapter, however: The Land of Peace, was rushed do to the nature of the series and was innocent enough, we purposely made it childish to give a good intro to the more complex and dark series. In Episode 1, Dink gets his claw sword stolen and has to get it back. It was short, it could be beaten in 10 minutes regularly, 5 minutes if you knew where everything was. I was appointed to make interesting graphics and maps, he was to do scripting and maps as well.
Since my part was to make new graphics, and the D-mod had none that needed making I decided to redo/mod/change the original Dink graphics. I had already done it once before, Dink's idle and walking animations were converted to him wearing a full body red suit, it was just his clothes colorized, but it looked professional. The red suit was to be in a Dmod we thought up and never released during the first year of the community, some of the older members might remember a few posts on the message board about it and me for that matter.
The main reason older members might not remember me is because I didn't talk much, just read. So anyway, back to the dmod. At the time I remember someone modifying dink graphics to give him a black coat for an upcoming dmod, but I believe the idea never came through. So over many hours and many cans of Mountain Dew, I presented Dink in blue pants, the reviewers thought them jeans, thats fine by me.
I was saddened that they were just regarded offhand. I think most people do not recognize the amount of work that goes into modifying animations. Since Seth or as I like to call him, "The Keeper of the Models," never released the original 3DS Max models one can not simply change the texture and re-render the graphics. One must go back pixel by pixel, literally. So I did that and colorized his pants. There were 174 new frames of animation in the original first chapter of the saga, I think that is quite impressive.
Enough ranting, well March 2000 rolled around and we finished the first dmod after a few weeks of scripting and mapmaking, me doing the new Dink. Right now it currently has a 7.4 'Good', understandably, it was short and rather uninteresting. It had 35 screens in which only 15 were vital. The rest of the Saga never came to be in the episodic fashion we imagined as we moved the following month and forgot about the dmods.
We have been around the dink community since then once every few months keeping are preverbial finger on the pulse, and I am pleased to say that the Dink community is still strong. That brings me to the end, what comes next for us? Well me, my brother, and a friend are reworking the Saga, the first part you see in the original has been reworked so it is at least 5 times longer. The game continues after the showdown with the gang and opens up into an expanisive dmod with more new humor, graphics, magic, and weapons to create a Dmod experience that has never been done before.
As for all the alternative hero talk that has been going on lately, my opinion reflects our dmod. Dink does not need new heroes, Dink himself just needs a facelift, what started with the blue pants continues, Dink will get a black jacket and boots and ditch the armband, the way he gets them is exciting too. Overall I feel that it will be exponentially better than the first. I played through the original today and realized how crappy it was. I now think of it, in comparison it is sort of like a half completed beta of a demo.
Look out for me on the boards and main page commenting for more self-pimpage of the Dmod.
