I was actually allowed to make a d-mod for my final project when I was my last year of high school (Legend's Tale demo). I also made a d-mod for my English class as another assignment (New Shores: The Maori). I think making students do things they don't want to do as projects is detrimental for the learning process. I sure learned more about programming by doing stuff myself than I did at high school.
