Ninja Gaiden on the NES was also kind of in the same vein as Battletoads... extremely punishing and stupid hard.
Eh, I played to 6-2 recently. That's when extremely punishing and stupid hard. comes in. Up until that point, the cheapest things were shitty enemy placement specifically to get you to fall. The only other section I can think of that was 6-2 levels of bullshit, but not as bad, was the one before that tall knight thing I can't remember the name of who could not be dodged whatsoever. After being cheaply killed by nonsense enemies and causing them to attack in a certain pattern, I could get passed them. The way to defeat the knight was seriously just to walk up to him and hit him a lot and hope he dies first since his attacks are impossible to avoid.
6-2 on the other hand takes the section from before the knight and adds a pile of enemies on a few platforms. Bird knocks you down, 1 shotted. You kill a bird, it comes back instantly, knocks you down, one shotted. Goblin is throwing shit at you while this all happens and he's standing at the edge of a platform. It's stupid. I quit at that point saying that even if I got to the demon, he has three forms and if I don't beat them all on my first go, then the game's going to duck me over by sending me back to 6-1 or 6-2 or whatever.
