There are 9 bookcases the book can be in. The actual bookcase it's in is only determined after getting the quest from the barman. If you have looked at a bookcase before getting the quest, the book can still be in there after getting the quest.
A checklist of where the books can be located: There is one on level 1 (although there are two more bookcases on level 1, these contain other useful info, though these other two are not accessible until later in the game), one on level 2, one on level 3, one on level 4, one on level 5, three on level 6, and one on level 7. The bookcase on level 1 is accessible through level 4, but you really need to get past level 3 if you want to see the one on level 2.
For what it's worth, this quest is not needed for the completion of the game. I don't know where else you're stuck.
