Switching Dink versions

Does anyone have any creative ideas about switching from the original Dink to the newer version?

Anyone who has a mixture of DMODs that use both versions probably has faced this problem. Most probably just use the newer version for everything, but some only work properly in the original.

I've tried installing Dink in two separate places on my HD, together with the DMODs that work best in each one. No cigar. You can only have one install of Dink, it seems, on a given HD.

Uninstalling and reinstalling the other one is a rather ODD way of switching from one kind of DMOD to another. Isn't there a better way?

I don't see why it wouldn't work having both versions of Dink installed. What trouble does it give you when you attempt installing both?

Maybe try to install one, then make a copy of it, then uninstall it and install the other one, and then copy your copy of the other one back somewhere?

lol, "guy".

Anyway, if you want both versions, install the old one first, then go to Dink's installation directory, rename dink.exe to dink106.exe (or similar), and then install the new version in the exact same place. Everything will be overwritten, but you'll be leaving the 1.06 executable available next to the 1.08 one, which you can then use in the place of 1.08 if you like in DFArc2's configuration.

You'd better check the compatibility list.

I would recommend installing Dink Smallwood v1.07 Beta 3 to C:\Program Files\Dink Smallwood 107\

Then, rename the Dink Smallwood v1.07 .exe to dink107.exe, and copy it to C:\Program Files\Dink Smallwood\

In DFArc2, select Edit, then Options. You can select the .exe file to use to play Dink with. When you want to use Dink Smallwood v1.07, select 'dink107.exe' from the drop-down. When you want to use v1.08, select 'dink.exe'

Good luck!

1.08 does, but 1.06 and 1.07 don't, so there wouldn't be a problem.

Okay, why the duck would you make use of the registry? Who made this silly decision? The Windows registry is an abomination.

Not sure, but it's there. Remove the registry key and DFArc2 will say "no correct registry key found, trying to use outdated INI". Personally I think keeping to make use of the INI would have been better, with some small changes it could make Dink an easier program to take with you on a memory stick and play anywhere.

blackguard: there are no conflicting ini's since Dink 1.08 still prefers to use the registry first... and the INI changes to the directory of the last Dink you started anyway.

Lol, at least the staff on this place has humor.

I did not bypass the swear filter. You simply forgot to censor the Cyrillic c. Not my fault.
