ack, I apologize for the bugs. I tried to send in the patch a couple years ago, but my email account thought it had a bug and it got tedious with a dialup connection. I figured I would send it in later but never got around to it. but I'm submitting the newer version right now.

I just uploaded the newer version. I test drove it a few times and seems that all the crashes are in playing it in Dink 1.8, which will hopefully be fixed in the full version. I'm sorry about this, but I suppose it's one of the things that comes with starting the game long before the new version came out. To play the demo bug-free just use invertigo's 32 bit mode/windowed mode dink under the source files, and run a shortcut to it with -truecolor and -game outlanderdemo2 (or whatever directory the game is under). once again I apologize for all these new version bugs, but hopefully as I get the modding thing down once again I'll get them all fixed.

You haven't Downloaded it into the "NET"? YET? Please keep us posted; I have a quick question though: I have never done this before, (52 yrs. old, we didn't have computers then!) How long do you think it takes to make a full dmod? Please don't get me wrong, I'm asking?! Peace!!

Depending on how ambitious you are and how big you set out to make it, it could take days or years. It took about a year for me to finish the Outlander demo (transitioning from an old project I abandoned into it). Then I was pretty inactive on it for a couple years, and am picking up on it again, with it about 3/5 done.

Huh? What? I don't understand a thing you said in this post? I'm an idiot when it comes to this stuff! I started playing the NEW version, but with no changes! When do you think the full version will be done? Bye for now, Lance.

Because of some interactions with the new version of dink, it works on a source project. Download invertigo's 32-bit/windowed mode dink under source projects, put the exe in the dink smallwood directory (you can rename it dink2 or something else so you don't have to replace the original dink.exe). then just make a shortcut to invertigo's exe. right-click to the properties of that shortcut, and under the target section, right after the "C:\program files\dink smallwood\dink2.exe" (or whatever path you use) type in "-truecolor -game outlanddemo2" without the quotes, and replacing the outlanddemo2 if the game is under a different folder name. hope that clears things up.

sorry about having to use a source project with it. the full game will probably be done sometime between winter and next summer, depending on how much more I add.

I tried this earlier, but had no difference in preformance. It's quite possible I made a mistake while typing the direction path?! I'll try it again, and let you know how it works. If I follow the path you suggested, then do I have to do the shortcut part? Because, I don't really understand how to do that? Thanx, Lance. P.S. if you use DFarc2, and easy way is just to go to "options" and select whatever you called invertigo's 32 bit dink.exe under the "choose dink application". I think it should work then

I havea few more questions for you: 1)can yo tell me how to create a "shortcut"; 2)when I go to extract, do I use ALL the files in the box; 3) I found a DFarc.exe in my Dink folders, is that the same thing as DFarc2??? I'm getting confused with this!! If DFarc.exe is different than DFarc2, then where can I find DFarc2 to download; I don't remember WHERE I found it before? Man, it just keeps getting weirder!

It doesn't keep getting weirder, but not being able to do a basic computer action like creating a shortcut is a bit of a serious problem.

1. You create a shortcut by creating them. Right-click > new > shortcut is one way to do it.
2. I don't get what you mean. A dmod file is one file which it automatically extracts to the right place for you.
3. If you have Dink 1.08, that is the correct version of DFArc. The window title states that it is v2.0 if it is v2.0, anyway.

What I had to do is: hilite "dink.exe", then I saw "send to"; the file was saved to desktop. Next, I right clicked on the zip file, right clicked on "properties", but got this: ...etfiles\content.1ES\F558T3NH\dwindowsrc[1].zip I rried several things next 1) I added -truecolor-gameoutlanddemo2 (invalid); I tried 2) c;\program files\dink smallwood\dink2.exe-truecolor-game outlanddemo2 (invalid)! The message that poped up was: The name c:\program' specified in the Target box is not valid. Make sure the path & file names are correct. So, as of now, I don't know WHAT TO DO? If someone would be so kind as to email me a "step by step" procedure, I'd be willing to try again! I've been working on this since last night, but none of this means squat to me (the "noob"); my email address is: ecnal1955@hotmail.com Help!!

A "C:\Program does not exist" error point towards the fact that you forgot to put the entire shortcut path between double quotes. If you forget them, Windows will try to use MS-DOS friendly 8.3 files, which means a max of 8 characters for a file/folder name and no spaces.

You'd better delete that shorctut and do this instead:

1. Right-click on the desktop. Select new > shortcut.
2. Browse to the dink.exe in the wizard you get. Click next.
3. Enter a nice name for the shortcut. For example, "Outlander". Click Finish.
4. Go to the shortcut's file properties (right-click > properties) and put double quotes around the the file's location (only if it doesn't have it already).
5. Add your command line parameters (-truecolor-gameoutlanddemo2) at the end of the path, AFTER the last double quote.

I'm not sure if you can do step 4 and 5 together with step 2. If so, it'll save you some steps. Enjoy.

I think I might be getting a handle on this (about time!); my next question is: after I add: -truecolor-gameoutlanddemo2 TO the thing in the target box, HOW do I get it back again, or will it do it by itself? If this the way to think about going ahead with what I've been doing, then I was too close to the problem in the begining! Please advise! How do I word this: will I get a send to(?) option?

I don't get what you mean. Change a shortcut's info, click OK, and it's changed permanently. Add a second shortcut if you want to have links to Dink/DFArc AND Outlander.

EDIT: "send to" is just a cheap way to quickly copy a file or open it with an application. It's also a way to make shortcuts on the desktop, but so was the way I explained (plus it allows you to create shortcuts anywhere, not just "send to desktop".

I think I'm close: what I type into the target box is: "c:\program files\dink smallwood\outlanddemo2"-truecolor-game outlanddemo2 AFTER I do this, I cklick "accept", but then I get a message: "name and path not correct"!????? What am I doing wrong? It has to be staring me in the face and LAUGHING????????? DaVince, and amoebalord are saying virtually the same thing! What am I missing? Should I use (""), or ("), onthe first part of the line, should I not, or, should (""), or(") go around the entire line? Please send your help, again! Thanx, Lance.

Make sure the program (not the shortcut) is actually in the dink smallwood folder. If you're not sure then make a new shortcut and in the target box put " -truecolor -game outlanddemo2" (without quotes) after what is already written there. For example:

"c:\program files\dink smallwood\outlanddemo2" -truecolor -game outlanddemo2

though that first bit might be different.
First bit with "" second bit without. Don't forget a space before each - .
Hope this helps

Hi, it's Lance; amoebalord has me confused now: he says to download Invertigo's 32-bit/windowed mode (in sorce projects), next he says to: put the exe in the Dink Smallwood directory? Does he mean for me to download the COMPLETE PROGRAM, or dink.exe? Next he says: then make a shortcut to Invertigo's exe? This is where I think I'm having trouble----he says to use the shortcut (right click on properties of the shortcut). Then to type in-truecolor-game outlanddemo2 (without ")around them. I did this, but got an invalid message. 2 PROBLEMS: 1)the whole-32bit file, or just dink.exe? And using properties of a dink shortcut. I hope you understand, because I don't! I'll be waiting for a reply. This can't be that hard, is it? Just dang confusing! I have so many notes laying around, that I don't know where I am. I'm begging you!! Could you be a friend, and give me step by step instructions on how and what I need to do this? I can't keep up with all of my notes, and at this point, I'm thinking about deleting everything and starting over!

Blargh, you could have used paragraphs to split up your text.

Outlander needs a special (older) version of the Dink engine, which is Invertigo's version. If you download the file you'll notice it's only really just one exe. Rename it to something useful like dink32.exe.

Now make the shortcut of that file. I explained it, other people explained it, and I'm not gonna explain it again.
July 29th 2007, 07:45 AM
dinkdead.gif
Ah, sorry, wrong path. It's not:
"c:\program files\dink smallwood\outlanddemo2" -truecolor -game outlanddemo2
it should be:
"c:\program files\dink smallwood\dink2.exe" -truecolor -game outlanddemo2

You need just dink.exe from inside the zip folder.

The easiest way to make a shortcut is to right-click on the program and select "create shortcut". Don't bother with wizards.
I can do step by step if you like but try this first.

PS.
Make sure it's:
"c:\program files\dink smallwood\dink2.exe" -truecolor -game outlanddemo2
not:
"c:\program files\dink smallwood\dink2.exe"-truecolor-game outlanddemo2

If you really want to play this you could try an older version of Dink, 1.07 or earlier. I don't know where to get it from though, but some people here must have it. Redink1 probably.

If you downloaded the modified version of Dink, made a shortcut to the Dmod plus extra options, then yes, that's all. You can wait all you want, but that won't fix the Dmod.

Or just use DFArc2 and play the game in the original Dink 1.08 game in "true colour" mode over there - it should work, I played it before that way.

I don't want to seem to harsh or anything, but over the last few weeks hell7fire1 has been a bit n00bish. If you have something good to say in an old thread, then it may be excusable, but continuously reviving old threads with seemingly pointless or moranic posts does get annyoing. For some, it can also be confusing, as you wonder why posts like this are at the top of the board.

I agree with yeoldetoast on this one, I wasn't changing the subject in the thread and presume that other people may come along with the same question.

To me, it makes sense to have 1 topic per thread and 1 thread per topic, unless a thread has become too cluttered to make the answer easy to find.
