The Dink Network

New Contest Idea

Though it would be a diffucult one to do I think there should be a multiplayer d-mod contest (as you know if you have recently read the great american novel that is my profile). We know it is possible, and with tons of scripting I guess anything (virtual at least) could be possible. Plus it would be fun to see what people came up with to connect onto the internet, and what works best in multiplayer (such as puzzles that require multiple players, or where players compete, or an rpg requiring multiple players, etc.) I just wanted to see what people thought (it will probably be riduculed [usually {not here thankfully} my ideas are ridculed]), tell me if any of this makes sense, maybe if they are runnng out of contest ideas they can use this one (though the amount of contest time would have to be long, because of all the scripts). Tell me what you think, but I might not be on for quite awhile.

The dink engine isn't built for that, this 'multiplayer' questions has been asked by many other guys. But they all get the same answer: It isn't possible. And also, a contest for multiplayer?! There isn't that much of dinkers that can script for a regular game, so I don't think a single would have joined for a multiplayer contest

But another contest would be fun to see

Nope, I don't think dink online would be possible. It's hard to chanage things in dink using scripts, and there are few members that know how to change the dink engine.

Well thanks for your opinions, and for not flaming me over and over like I thought would happen.

Friendship is magic
It is possible to make a two player Dink game. It just won’t be easily possible to let other players go to different screens. What would be possible is to make for example some fighting buddy for dink that's controlled by other buttons so you would play together on the same computer. When Dink would leave the screen the fighting buddy would appear together with dink like the summon spell from Rabidwolf9. So is someone able to do something like this because I don't know how to change the buttons to control such a character.

The problem is the only keys you can use for movement are the arrow keys. You can try to use other keys for movement (with key-##.c scripts), but it is really jumpy.

True that moving could be done, jumpy or not, I've thought about this and come to a more difficult problem. What if you want player 2 to interact with objects/ push objects / or take touch damage?

Along with the multiplayer idea, maybe not so much online, but maybe something like a game that's meant for for switching players or taking turns? Maybe something like checkers or chess where it would switch from player to player each turn. This would be more doable and there could be a lot of creativity in this.

About touch damage... You can inspire from my bomberman spell, in HonorQuest. It explodes when a monster approaches. The script can be modified to hurt the second player when it approaches.
Edit: you can also do push and talk by pressing certain keys. The script will search for the closest sprite(that the sec players looks at), and if the distance is less than a constant, it will interact. Maybe I'll try to do this myself if I have time.

I am working on some sort of project that may end up being multiplayer. It's basically a new battle style. It will be a sort of turn taking system (player/computer). I may implement a pvp option if I get around to it. Maybe in a future version.

Note: By multiplayer, I mean taking turns over the same computer, not internet.

Well, I didn't expect this to keep going on for a long time, so I thought I could be off for a while. Thanks for the ideas and things. The only idea I can really come up with for a multi player dink thing though, now is one where you are small and the entire game is one screen, since two players can't be on different screens. However then scripting would need to be done so tha eac player can be moved independantly, such as have one be the brain for dink, and another be a monster that moves with the other players arrow keys, attacks when the player presses a key (I am not sure ctrl would work) and cast a spell when the player presses another key. Another idea is have a bunch of differnet battle fields, and one of the players gets to choose (they each take turns, first player two, for having to learn new controls, gets to choose, etc.) which battlefield they want, each one has different things. Also you would be much smaller (as would other things) so one screen will seem big (though character speed might also have to be reduced), so that you could have something like a one story house, with 8 different rooms, with openable doors (walk into them) that close when no one enters or exits for a while. My head hurts as though it is being melted by get smashed by a two ton hammer now (which would take a long time because it would be almost impossible) and now my hands hurt, and your eyes probably hurt. Don't worry, I'll figure it out one way or another.

I've been thinking that a good contest idea would be an homage contest - emulating your favorite movie, tv show, or song in a dmod. I know that there is a star wars dmod, but I was thinking more along the lines of something that had regular dink characters, but payed tribute to a good story. For example, it could be dink has to perform quests simular to an indiana jones movie, or beat back some zombies, or slay some vampires.
