Once a Hero: Development Thread
This will (from now on) be the only thread used to relay details to you all about the forthcoming d-mod, "Once a Hero...". Well, that's the intention.

A few taster screenshots will do for now. And before you ask, the answer is no. They aren't as good as Simeon's. He's just too freakin' good at mapping. The she dog.

I'm sorry

Well, the community needs some quality D-Mods so keep working on it
Any info on the story?

Looks interesting, hope you finish it
The second screenshot reflects my thoughts perfectly: What the hell is THAT?! This looks to be a disaster, a travesty in D-Modding, complete and utter crap! Give up now before you wind up demolishing your reputation with this gigantic turd!
Actually, I like what I see.
Actually, I like what I see.
As the millennia have drifted by, magic has vanished from the world. The goblins, the dragons, the great mages and seers, all have vanished from the land and been forgotten. Their existence slipping into myth and legend.
Yet this is not a tale of magic's disappearance from the world, but is of a boy. A boy, named Dink Smallwood. Upon discovering a hidden passage in their humble little village, he and is friend stummble across a selection of ancient tomes.
Their lives will be changed forever...
Originally seen as a Legend of Tenjin rip-off with style (it still is to an extent), this d-mod has grown in ambition greatly. Striker is also going to be quite heavily involved in this project.
He's cool like that.

Yeah, I've been wanting to work with Sabre for a while and this looks like a good project to jump in on. From what he already has (and what we plan to implement), it's looking very good.
youre still supposed to let me map a part of bftg ass but look how far that got
Hm, I seem to remember being told the same or similar...
hes selling us out he just wanted our sexual favors
In case you didn't know, I am not continuing BFTG. Most of the files from beyond the original demo are gone and I simply don't feel like reviving it.
Back in early December, I also asked for a better description of what you wanted to do for AHP for mapping, but received nothing. I suppose I expected too much, as you would need halfway decent communications skills for to me actually know what you wanted.
Sorry to crush your dreams of me being your boyfriend, joshy.

After a short sabbatical, I'm resuming work on the d-mod. Having gone a bit far with creating new areas without finishing the previous ones, I'm having to slog back through the d-mod, writing scripts and tidying up maps. This may not be fun, but is vital in creating a good d-mod.
Currently I'm working on re-mapping the 2nd village, as well as finishing the quest scripts. Then a new item (for which I've got a cool effect in mind) to access the 3rd village... man, I'd forgotten how tiring making d-mods can be!

After a long sabbatical, I've resumed work on the d-mod. As many of you will have noticed, I've been uncharacteristically absent from the DN of late; the wonders of moving into a student house, organising two separate football teams and managing a girlfriend having taken their toll on my DinkTime™.
Yet the winter break from football is fast approaching, and with it a bit more time for the d-mod. Woopdee-freakin'-doo.
Hopefully Striker hasn't grown weary of me yet, and is still interested in making the d-mod. The concept behind it is sound, and the opening sections, whilst in definite need of tweaking, work very well indeed.
I'll keep you posted...

Heh, I currently don't have my good comp with all my Dink Files on it. I'm also in the process of trying to move to another apartment (if I get it). I will finally be able to get a place to myself with the beautiful Brassfire, or... get to do the whole homeless vagabond thing again.
Development on the d-mod continues at a reasonable pace, and the first "proper" quest is now finished. It's not a particularly challenging one, but it's a good starting point for the d-mod to branch out from.
The first couple of classes are almost completely operational, those of Adventurer and Thief. Only the latter has any real impact on the game however, as the Adventurer class is (pretty much) the default choice. Speaking of which, perhaps I should explain how the class system is going to work.
Actually, I think I'd prefer to leave it until the d-mod is in a more complete state. I don't want to talk of the Fantastic Class System™, only for it to change half way through development.
Anywho, here's another couple of teaser shots for all you beautiful people out there...

Enjoy!

Wonderful screenshots! I like those wagon wheels! Can't wait for this DMOD!
Wish I could help somehow

Glad you like the screenshots. And your continued support would be great help, I haven't managed to finish a d-mod for a while now.
For the wagon wheels, and more wonderful graphics, check out Simon Klaebe's Debris graphics pack. It really is fantastic.

I'll add my support to diwata's. I like the look of the dmod. And I like the idea of a dmod with a class system. Interesting looking spider graphics in the Screenshot 5. And I agree that Debris is a good graphics pack.
Whilst it's by no means a certainty, the idea of a demo is in my mind. There is a supposed "curse" that afflicts d-mods for which a demo is created, but some of the most highly rated d-mods had them: Stone of Balance, Prophecy of the Ancients and Cloud Castle 2: Scarab all had early versions available for download.
If I do (I'll alsohave to confer with Striker about this), the demo is likely to take the adventure to either:
a) After the first Mini-boss.
b) After the first "proper" quest.
I'm not 100% sure either way, but even if a demo is released, I want it to be bug free... so it won't be out for a little while. Probably.

*squeee* Now I'm all excited! Hurry up and finish it, Sabre!
That reminds me, I need to get working on some more features for some of the other classes.
Sorry Sabertrout, didn't pay enough attention; it's there already.
Thx

Well, little work has been done, but the d-mod is still progressing! I have become mildly concerned by my lack of progress, but Rome wasn't built in a day, as the saying goes!
I should be releasing a new demo in the next week or so (hopefully in the next couple of days), though there won't be much different from the old one. A few secrets, bug-fixes and a couple of "cool" things to make the d-mod that bit more special.
Heck, I may even give you all a new screenshot soon! Wouldn't that be a treat?

A treat would be some chips because I already see the fish in front of me.
But anyway it would be nice to see more progress.
Cant wait until this D-Mod is done! I've played cc1 and cc2 and both was awesome, I'm sure this one will be even better
And I would probably be too lazy to edit my review...
