Hopefully this won't raise as much flaming as my previous discussion...
a) Who here has ever received an email from themselves that they didn't send?
b) Who has ever forged an email to look like someone elses?
*raises hand to both*

option A. I sent my freind an email and i got it back, but it said it was friom me!
Lol, I can combine these both and raise my hand:
Once I sent e-mail to myself to test out some stuff, then I forgot to check it out. I never got around of opening that message.

A) happens dozens of times daily. Spambots are really fond of doing this.
Outlook Express makes it a hell of a lot easier to do, since it lacks extensive error-checking and authorisation capabilities.
I went into Outlook Express accounts options, set it up to use a false account, and used it successfully... although I did have to use an existing mail server.

Actually, I believe that most mail clients let you use a false address. Your real address will still be in the header content no matter what, though, and spam checking programs detect and compare those.
I checked the SMTP, and the only traces I could find were unusual servers and such. My identity was pretty much hidden.
a) has happened loads of times... Indeed, spambots.
I've never personally given myself out for someone else, but a 'friend' of mine once hacked my e-mail (well, I was kinda trusting and actually gave her my password, but hey, I was 11!) and sent a mail to all my other friends (which included a lot of penpals, which didn't help) saying I never wanted to write to them or see them ever again. After that, I had to go into a lot of trouble to get some of my contacts trusting me again... And of course, I she dogslapped the one who did it
