If you don't have an account, just leave the password field blank.
Outlook Express makes it a hell of a lot easier to do, since it lacks extensive error-checking and authorisation capabilities.
I went into Outlook Express accounts options, set it up to use a false account, and used it successfully... although I did have to use an existing mail server.
