We don't have a chat room any more right? Correct me if I'm wrong, I haven't been able to find one.

I noticed how many lurkers there were and I thought a chat room might be a nice way to just go WHOA 6 LURKERS without making a topic about it. The result: my masterpiece. A nice easy to use chat room I thought we might be able to use.

Not that it's a must have to have a chat room, I just thought it might be cool to have one.

Cool, the IRC channel was pretty much dead anyway.

A new chat room would be great, maybe someone could organize some sort of 'meetings' like there where in the past. Just agree on a time in advance so you have more than two or three people at a time...

EDIT: I was just trying this thing, but I got the following error:

Am I doing something wrong or is the chat room not working yet?

I don't know, I got on another computer and tested it and it worked fine. Is your java updated?

EDIT: I'm replacing the current script with another to see if that works.

EDIT 2: There's a lot of adverts in the new one, but if it works it works.

Hmmm... Apparently my Java wasn't updated. Somehow the autoupdater must have screwed up...

Let's see if it works now.

Tells me I need to have Java enabled in my browser. Guess I could use an IRC client instead of a web based one.

I tried to connect to irc.centralchat.net, but I couldn't find a Dink Smallwood channel anywhere on that huge network. Can someone please post the information to connect without a Java client?

Works fine for me, it doesn't like copy pasting anything though.
I had to try typing a link up, and that failed as well. Can't select text that's in the chat box or click any of it.

Man, this chat sucks! (No offense Pillbug). I can watch other people chatting, but as soon as I write a message, or try to change my name and such, it reports of a problem. -_-

I might try to create a chat room for Dink with another site, because I tried Pillbug's chatroom with my friend's PC aswell and didn't work there either.

As far as I know, pillbug is still working on improving the chat room. You could tell him what kind of errors you are getting, which browser you use, etc. He might be able to fix it.

If it is so then i think that maybe servers in finland are trying to block it. <maybe>

Why not work with the IRC chatroom instead and setup a Java client for people to use it.

11, and, I know what's wrong (maybe not with skull, with the fact that my chatroom just plain doesn't load). The website hosting thingy I use is freewebs.com, and they are doing some Maintenance. That's why the chat doesn't load at the moment.

So, it signs me automaticly in. But when I try to change my name and avatar or post a message, it reports of a problem. It seems that the problem always comes when the chat tries to connect.

Pillbug, is there a way to actually register to your chat, or is it just that you automaticly sign in and then you must change your username?

When it comes to chatrooms, I agree with glenn: you can't beat IRC. Here's a basic guide a friend of mine made a long while ago. I modified bits, you can guess which bits. Any errors between the *** are not by me, as it's mostly a literal copy-paste.

This is where you point your IRC client to:

irc.freenode.net, #dinksmallwood

Sometimes, irc://irc.freenode.net/dinksmallwood will also work, depending on your settings.

If you don't have an IRC client (if you're not sure, this means you don't have an IRC client) I personally recommend mIRC:
http://www.mirc.com - after downloading and installing that, clicking those links above should get you somewhere. mIRC is pretty spiffy, except for the troutslap, which some people seem to think is funny. (Hint: It's not.)
Don't be afraid if it says you need to register it after 30 days. Just wait a few seconds, and the continue button will suddenly become available.

Useful commands to type into an mIRC window:
/join #channel (self-explanatory... example usage: "/join #dinksmallwood")
/part #channel optional parting message goes here, or not (leave that channel but stay connected to that server/other channels, example usage: "/part #dinksmallwood I must leave this channel for an inexplicable reason!")
/quit optional parting message goes here, or not (Closes your connection to the entire IRC server and all channels you're in - example usage: "/quit I need to work, so I can buy more coke, so I can chat more.")
/nick ThisIsMyNewUserName (works instantly unless someone else is currently using the name, example usage: "/nick magicman" Spaces are not allowed, nor are most weird characters - but letters and numbers are all good.)
/msg SomeonesNick This is a private message. (It will only be said to SomeonesNick)
/me emotes passive-aggressively (Will look like: *magicman emotes passive-aggressively*)

Freenode only (i.e, these commands are not guaranteed to work on other IRC servers):
/msg nickserv REGISTER password email address ("/msg nickserv register mypassword myemail@email.com ")
This registers your nick. Registering your nick is a GOOD THING and you should DO IT. Registering your nick means that if/when someone else tries to use yours, they get a happy little message in their main window:

[08:00] -NickServ- This nickname is registered. Please choose a different nickname, or identify via /msg NickServ identify <password>.

You will also get this happy little message - but, you know your password (right?) so you can solve this by, unsurprisingly, typing:
/msg NickServ IDENTIFY password
These are the only two commands you'll really have to use. But if you're curious and want to know more about this stuff:
/msg NickServ HELP

If you don't want to bother with downloading a separate client, use mibbit:
http://www.mibbit.com/chat. Choose "Freenode" where it says "IRC:", then enter "#dinksmallwood" where it says "Channel:". Use your forum nick for the nickname (or anything else).

Personally I don't particular care about which chat room is used, but right now there are three chat rooms in use. It isn't like the Dinknetwork has such a huge user base that it can support all three. Especially as we don't have scheduled meetings...

Pillbug's chat (this thread):
Some people don't get this to work. Personally I'm not really fond of the looks of the thing either, especially the smilies can become bothersome when overdone.

Skull's chat (Thread):
- Only supports a limited amount of people online, so not feasible right now. Skull is looking for a new chat, but right now I think we better not introduce yet another chat. So I suggest we ditch this one to keep things somewhat clear.

IRC chat:
-IRC client is difficult to set up. But perhaps with a java client it shouldn't be to hard (hopefully).

So, someone should make the cut here, this competition can't be good. And someone (preferably the same someone) should set up regular meetings.

EDIT: Personally I have a preference to using the IRC channel for the reasons stated above.

Apart from the smilies in Pillbug's chat, to which I think a disable option should be available so you can only see the text that creates the smiley, I preffer his one. But I'll give the IRC chat a go for a while too, just gotta download the mirc client thing for it.

Just use the mibbit link magicman refered to if you want to chat straight away. I kept getting errors when trying to set up mIRC...

IRC isn't exactly user-friendly though. I think it's the reason the old chat died.

One single URL anyone can click on to instantly chat is much more appealing for non-regular Dinkers. I think we should stick with pillbug's chat room. He's also improving it so it's not finished yet.

I think it would be best to use the IRC channel, and set up a simple-access client for that. A lot of people use IRC. A lot of people don't.

Okay, I finally got an internet connection to my laptop. And the chat works now. Yay!

There is already a #dinksmallwood channel on FreeNode.

EDIT: I went into it, and nobody said anything.

It seems to be pretty quiet; half the people in there are just afk lol, trying to look smart by appearing to be there.

Well, I'm using IRC at the moment. GlennGlenn, Magicman, Erwin, Ex-Deathevn, Scratcher, Skull, Robj and MadStalker also seem to be on occasionally. I don't know how many people are using one of the other chats.

The hell? The link I gave did not contain any "warning". It's the URL to the chat.

I don't know what you typed, but the thing that ended up in the post is a link to "linkvalidator.net", and then some other stuff. It causes a banner to appear above the Flash applet that says "The website below is not part of xat.com", and a warning to not write your xat password anywhere. There is also a link that'll remove the warning frame.
