Rankings suck ass
Yup, it's just true.
However, I know something that could be done to improve the rankings, check this:
mini review: 1
full review: 3
misc file: 4
dmod demo: 5
dev file: 6
dmod romp: 7
dmod quest: 10
dmod epic: 15
good idea for improvement of rankings (this one): 10000000
take it into consideration, redinkdude

indeed, seems a natural 'pointgiving' system!!!
at least with this system the rankings would be a 1000% more accurate !

No, don't like it. You put 15 mini reviews equal to 1 epic d-mod... Don't you think that's underrated? I would say 30 mini-reviews versus 1 epic.

Christiaan's example only needs some balancing that's all !!!
But you're right : creating an epic is huge ...
compared to a romp.

Ok, ok. It's not perfectly balanced, but the idea is good, right?

Good point but remember : not everybody is capable of producing an epic !!!
only few have the time and the knowledge to do so : give the others who mean a lot to the community a chance as well.

And a third on the way (well it is just ideas in my head right now)
Epics take about 10 months to a year (for me), so my biased view is
Romps: 10
Quests: 30
Epics: 100
Other Demos 5, Development files 3, Ultilities 7... reviews well I think 0.25 for mini and 1 for full

I think the amount of points given should be a multiplication of it's review score...anybody could create an epic that is comple cack.
For example...
Romps : Review score x 5
Quests : Review score x 8
Epics : REview score x 15
Something along those lines...as then the better people think the game is, the more points it gets!

Perhaps one based on exponents, depending on the score, size, and *maybe* type. I'm not sure what I'm talking about yet. Give me a day.

The MB system is silly. If I make a romp and put 10 wav file songs in there, it will be the biggest d-mod ever in terms of file size!

NoooO!! for me, the main thing i want in a nrankings system is to REMOVE the difference between full and mini reviews. why? because the "fullness" of a review is determined by staff members every time they are created/modified, and they seem to change between full and mini every time you change them, which makes a mockery of the entire rankings system. i suggest either:
scrub the rankings. why have them at all? i mean, we all know who does the work in this community. and anyway, does the rankings system work out how much work I'm doing on ddmodd, or do i ahve to stop and write reviews?
or: do something like this:
1 point for reviews
10 points * ARS
simple, eh? yeah yeah, epic vs romp dmods, bleh bleh bleh yadda yadda yadda.
BTW, party at my new flat tomorrow night, you're all invited. email me for the address. (In NZ tho)

All of these arguments just go to prove my point. A random list of people is much more simpler and accurate than any of your formulas...
Tullisti thinks that the Full/Mini designation should die, because one of his reviews was accidently designated as Mini when it was supposed to be Full. And yet, he doesn't care about anyone who releases files. Simon (IMHO, rightly) believes that an Epic should be worth much more than anything else. And so on...
There is not going to be an accurate Magic Formula, ever.
And for the curious, below is the last non-random iteration of the magic formula, which is good, but I'm never going back to it ever again.
The Magic Formula used for the Overall Rankings:
(ARS = Average Review Score - 3, if none, defaults to 2.0)
D-Mod Unfinished = Average Review Score * 4
Demo = ARS*4
Weird = ARS*7
Romp = ARS*5
Quest = ARS*10
Epic = ARS*20
Dev Source = ARS*1
Tutorial = ARS*4
Utility = ARS*10
File = ARS*3
Graphics = ARS*3
Music = ARS*3
Misc Add-On = ARS*2
Cheat = ARS*2
Frontend = ARS*5
File = ARS*2
Translation = ARS*4
Full Reviews = 1
Mini Reviews = 0.25

I can't believe it... a random list is more accurate than a list based on released files and reviews?? You, my friend, are heavily insane

Also, explain why Hunter87 is on 7, while has done absolutely nothing, only has 8 mini reviews, while SimonK isn't even on there!

I know, but if you got a 1... you will get:
1 x 100 x 5 : 2.5 = 200 points...
but if you get a 7:
7 x 30 x 5 : 2.5 = 420 points
size doesnt matter so much...
but:
9 x 220 x 15 : 2.5 = 11880 points
so a epic rated at a 9 at 220mb size... would be superior!!! Go PQ

i wonder how you came to that conclusion?? my point score is so low, i really do not give a toss what happens to MY scores, but i do think it's a joke to have points awarded to something which is based on a staff members decision.
as for not caring about people who release files, my former post was more to do with the fact that i wasn't about to think up some long and complicated system of points for epics/ romps. I'll leave that to someone else.
thirdly, can someone enlighten me as to why the rankings thing actually exists?? some have asid "so we can see who is the coolest cat on the network", but surely just looking through the forums will teach you that? or maybe people are too lazy to see who just released a new dmod/dev file/walkthrough....
