microsoft word alternative
Well, we got a new computer which came with the free trial of microsoft office and all that stuff. It expired. Before I go out and buy the real thing, I would like to know, are there any freeware alternatives?
openoffice.org.
Wasn't expecting such a hefty filesize. Woah, this might take a couple of days with dial-up

Try abisource.com. It has a smaller alternative called AbiWord. However, it has only a Word altrenative, no Excel and etc equivalents.
But it's a good piece of software. I'm using OpenOffice all the time, and it works really well.
Maybe I'll try that. Word is really about the only thing we use out of it.
I would in fact try this if I were not using dial up, which would make the download nearly impossible for me. Too bad school's like over for me, I usually download the heavier files on those computers and save them to my flashdrive

I once downloaded nearly a gigabyte in a single month on dialup. So I'm sure you can get OO.org, even if you have to leave it on overnight.
Ha ha very funny
You could've at least suggested WordPad

That idea just might be crazy enough to work
With my luck, the connecion will drop
Worth a shot though.

I consider OpenOffice and Word to be feature bloated.

Nearly a gigabyte? Ah, that's nothing! I easily exceed my 5GB monthly data cap on my connection.
You could try use a download manager, such as GetRight or Fresh Download.
Holy crap... about 45% through downloading, it stopped... I have to start all over. This sucks.

But certianly doable. You'd have to average at least 3k/s for the entire month, but it's *possible*
Easily? Not with dial up
Yeah, well I don't have dialup. I have broadband.

Infinitely interesting. Did you happen to notice the thread was on downloading massive files with dialup?
Back in the dialup days, I had this nice program GetRight.. you could pause downloads, so it might be nicer than leaving it on overnight or something. Don't know if it works in this particular case, some programs seem to want to be downloaded only by some odd links on their site and you just can't find the link to the *file*.
Might be worth a try, like Draconic suggested above

But he didn't say he downloaded 1 gigabyte in a month; he said he downloaded 1 gigabyte on dialup in a month, he might've had a broadband connection in the same month where he downloaded 10 gigabyte easily

Download Firefox just for this download. You can always pause/resume it. Also, if the connection fails, you can just choose to download it again and it will continue from where it last stopped (unless you empty your internet cache in the meantime).
Some downloadmanagers can do this stuff too (pausing, resuming after a failed download).

I would download a crack for microsoft word.
Try downloading with Flashget. It speed up download end maximizes use of bandwith. It has benn made from a shareware(only banners) into a freeware now.
I consider your posts to be bloated.
Whose, mine? And what does boated mean?
EDIT: I mean what does bloated mean, but you're free to explain 'boated' too.

Naw, I don't like nested view. Redink1 should somehow make his clear for the other setting (like adding a line 'reply to post #').
I have OpenOffice.org, but yeah, it's one hefty download for a dialupper. Maybe download it at the public library and put it on a memory stick?

I remember downloading Dink using Download Accelerator Plus on my 56K line. It was the first 'big' file I ever downloaded. Took me a whole day to get it!
That was like.. 5 years ago I think.

Back then it was better. Just a simple mild banner add, that if you were good enough you dissabled to save on bandwidth, and it was able to search ftp sites automatically for secondary resumable sources, as 3ddownloads had their server randomize the folder names for the files every hour or so to prevent autolinking and resuming.
We are getting DSL soon (like maybe in 5 days?). I'll just download OpenOffice then. I have no intention on downloading lots of different programs to get the one thing I'd use it for. I tried using FireFox to pause my download when I had to go offline, but when I got back online and resumed, it stopped giving me only part of the file. I think I can wait.
