Does anyone know any good town names because I can't think of any.

Describing place names are always good... for example, a town along the riverside could be Riveria.

I personally don't like pure random names that much, but the common practise is to randomly hit the keyboard for leads.

I object
I rather use different syllables and put them together.

So you take:

Ut Gra Po Loks and you creat a name like... Grapol?
Trni vla ko dom and you make a name like domko or vlako

But I agree with scratcher that I prefer more describing names.

And if I'm really desperate I use a random townname generator for inspiration.

Thank you guys. I think this will be usefull. But I might also use some Latin.

Then a huters town would be named Latro town because hunter means latro in Latin. This way you could also make some nice names. I also used it in Treasure Battles with Purunga town. pugna means battle and I changed it a little to Purunga town.

Those names remind me of the names of the classic Dungeon Keeper levels.

Here are some. I took them from Avernum.

Krizsan
Silvar
Shayder
Sharimik
Lorelei
New Cotra
Fort Emergence
Delis
Delan
Farport

Whatever the plagiarism limit is, this post goes way beyond it . And these names don't really fit the Dink World in my opinion. Some of these names have a meaning related to Avernum. Especially Fort Emergence.

I'm sure Erwin appreciates your help, but this thread is 4 months old, so the problem is probably solved by now

Great! The more the better! By the way could you also think of some names for people that fit in Dink?

Real-life names seem to work well enough for humans most of the time... Goblin names seem to have K's and G's in them : Trog, Krog, Morg, something like that.

I have a THOUSAND.

Loukkal'gepu
Cappadochy
Etrius
Tremeri
Zimice
Garinol
Mercurio
Aza
Sacha
Vodi

No thousands there.

Thanks! Where do you get those names from? They seem to be a bit weird. (I could be wrong. I know nothing about names. except that my name means "friend of the army") If you know even more names that would be verry nice. Espesialy when they're English names from around the year 1000 (Not neccecarely if you've got tired of thinking any.)

I get them from a game. Loukkal'gepu is my own invention.

MTG, Drake, and Chrispy also played Avernum games, I think.

As for me, I have bought Blades of Avernum, I have played the Avernum 1-2-3 demos and I plan to buy the Avernum trilogy and Avernum 4 soon.

I've never finished a game, because the large battles would always lag 'n crash, but yeah, I've played a bit. I remember the good old days of making a massive bitmap of the map in Avernum 3. I had over half the map made up. It was a freaking lot of screenshots and pasting. Did I mention how *massive* that file was as well?

Oh, and I can't wait for Avernum 4. Maybe the new compy won't crash during the battles.

Avernum 4 for Windows should be out in early March 2006... At least that's what Jeff Vogel said.

EDIT : Drakefyre's map of Valorim... Not really a giant map though.

EDIT 2 : The thread about the Avernum 4 for Windows release.

You could always take names of minor deities from mythology... for example:
Angerona, Haruspices, Mefitis, Semnocosus, Latona, Fulgora, Cupra... (all Roman)
Epona, Lyr, Nemain (Celtic)... and the list goes on... it helps to think of ones not commonly known (i.e. avoid 'Zeus' ) cause it gives you more freedom with their characteristics...
And you could combine the idea of Latin names and descriptive ones for towns... for example, 'silva' means woods, or forest... so if you played on that you'd have both a revealing, and hopefully unique, name for a town.

Silva means forest, I think.

Hmm... lol, yeah you're right... but I think of Latin words with their Classical pronunciation... in which case the 'v's are pronounced as 'w's... and 'c's as 'k's not 'ch's like in church latin... really screws up 'veni, vidi, vici' though!

Some companies such as squaresoft use real countrie's name. Usually the best way to name a country is to take a word in another language that represents that place and use that. For examnple, a place I was making once, Salem Island, is a place where there was peace between the natives and the indians. I'm not sure what language Salem is in, but I know for one thing it means "peace".
