There are enough forums out there on the Internet where you can post such comments but keep TDN free from such comments, ok?

indeed i think he didnt read the question right because your post lacks any punctuation and capital letters now if you just rightclick on the link that links to the file and select save target as youll get a window where you can select a file destination then you can open it by doubleclicking it in window explorer that is no internet explorer you fool but windows explorer or via the desktop or my computer or something just doubleclick on it and itll open in the program you assigned it to like windows media player if its not what you want then shiftrightclick and select open with or maybe that is already in windows xp i dont know i have 98se but things usually work the same so shiftrightclick on the file and select open with or anything like that and then you can select the program you want to open it with if you always want to open it with that program check the box if its there again i dont know if looks exactly the same on windows xp might be slightly different wordings or something but it might look like that if you dont see the program in that list there should be a browse button nearby.

Better?

cause: click on a link example

effect: midi starts playing with the old windows media player (mplayer2.exe in the wmp folder)

note: does not involve any right-clicking or saving-as or anything.

if you dont know how to do this you dont have to be an ass about it

Ah, this is way better. Separate lines, even colons.

I don't know about the English version, I only have the Dutch one. You might try "Tools" (button to the left of "Help") -> "Internet options" (last menu item) -> "Advanced" (rightmost item on the tab-row with only 3 tabs) -> "Browsing" (with the icon that looks like your standard application window) -> "Enable third party browser extensions" (third option).

I tried to describe the position of the options between parenthesis, because I don't know what it is in English. This should at least disable the quicktime thing. To let it play in mplayer2.exe, you should associate audio files with that program, because it'll now just open the file with the program you assigned to it.

This will also disable all other browser extensions you might have downloaded. Perhaps also Java. If you use loads of these extensions, you might want to go for the right-click way instead, since you need to restart your pc to let it take effect.

ok well ill try that but not if i can figure out another way cause of the possible side-effects. that was all pretty much right btw like exact wording but i think it was actually in different orders. you could have just said unclick the box that enables third party browser extensions in the internet explorer options that might have been easier.

midis open with mplayer2 like just in windows explorer or whatever the hell its called. just with IE it tries to play inside the browser with either quicktime or wmp.

also before i went into quicktime settings and unassociated all file types or something and now it tries to play certain things with normal windows media player INSIDE the browser. its really weird and stupid.

dis-enabling third party extensions DOESNT DO ANYTHING!!@!@!@! it opens up some quicktime thing in the browser still and it doesnt work and nothing even plays.

OK and also i figured out how to disable the quicktime thing doing something you go in quicktime preferences and click MIME settings and uncheck what you dont want to use quicktime plug-in (ie videos, audio, whatever) so i disabled all audio which includes midi format so now if i click a link to a midi file it doesnt try to play with quicktime plug in just nothing happens!

it does the "The page cannot be displayed" thing and it doesnt open with mplayer2 even thought midi files are susposed to open with it normally.

That just sucks...

There's also an option like "play music files in browser". I don't know if this does it, but it doesn't hurt to try. It might only affect in-page music, like found on SimonK's PQ-page.

If this also doesn't change anything, or still want to hear in-page music, I'm afraid I can't help you.

Okay, well I don't know if this will help but I go into 'my documents' folder(or any folder)and I click 'view' and then 'folder options'. Then I choose 'file types' and I scroll down to where 'midi sequence' is listed.I click it and then edit. There should be two choices of 'open' and 'play'.Click one and check where it's link is going. It has a browse so you can search and find you windows media player. Is that helpful?

I don't know how someone is able to say what sexual preferences a program has, but that aside... Midi files open with the media player embedded in IE, right? I think I've found a solution to it, but you'll need an extra tool called Tweak UI. You can download it here. The dowload link is somewhere in the bar to the right.

I don't know about the interface in the XP version, but you know the drill. Go to the IE-tab and deselect "shell enhancements". I turned it off, and when clicking on your link I was asked to save the file on disk, or to open it. This comes closest to what you want for what I can see now.

Note: Use Tweak UI at your own risk. It may have potential to screw up your system and it's not officially supported by Microsoft.

Note 2: You might even try enabling browser extensions again, though I'm not sure about that one.

Note 3, keep 'em coming: It'll disable the option "As web page" in the "view" menu of Windows Explorer.

You could always do some messing around in the registry. Or does WinXp not have a registry? Anyway, first restart and back up the registry, then search for the filename of the media player exe, and whenever you find it in a group of folders (very important!) that seem to have to do something with Ie, change that to your favorite player. Make sure you search the entire registry, as there always seems to redundant entries. Run Ie, and try to make it do what you want. If it works, Tada. However, if it fudges up, restore your saved copy of the registry. Oh, and don't do *anything* else, ie, run other programs, seach for virus's, check up web sites, open up solitary, etc, etc. Otherwise you could get your computer really really screwed up.

There are some other tricks you can do too, like, changing if you want it to auto-run certian kinds of file at all, and some other stuff, but I won't get into that now, as most of that stuff is tricky, and changes slightly on a case to case basis.
