What is the best way do you think?
What is a good way to play Dink? Do you all play differently or is there a certain way to get the best out of the game? What I mean is, where do you put your points when you go up a level? I keep my magic and defence fairly level. What do you do?
It all depends on the game. If I first play it, I invest in attack. Later on, after I beat it, I manage my abilities to lean toward a certain skill. For instance, in vanilla Dink, I go more towards magic with the herb boots equipped. My magic recharges quickly and I become a lightning bruiser.
I'm not sure if it's the *best* way, but I always pour everything on attack. Then, if I can damage enemies while wearing the herb boots (or something similar), I do that; otherwise just whatever can dish out the most hurt.
To put it in really nerdy online gaming terms, it's the "max DPS build". =)

Usually I focus a lot on defense. I almost never use the bow. I've yet to find it useful. Perhaps it'd be cool if someone wrote a script that upgrade the arrows to seek out enemies. I would but that seems complicated and I don't feel like putting a whole lot of effort into anything right now.
To decide whether I upgrade strength or magic - as it's usually not both- will depend on the game. Certain dmods have very limited if any magic options and yet still allow the upgrade of magic. In those cases I put points in strength.
My belief is that there's no point in upgrading magic if you don't even get hellfire.

Naked. With pizza.
Ultimate Cheat's multiple stat boost and then I hold down the tab key.
All D-Mods are a bit different, so it depends, but I mostly always pick attack. Sometimes, but very rarely, I go with magic.
Funny thing I've noticed, people who play the game for the first time (or rarely), usually tend to go with defense, and usually end up getting in a bit of a trouble later, because of that.

I almost always choose defense. Most DMODs have such powerful weapons (lightsword) that a bit of attack doesn't make much of a difference. Only if a DMOD doesn't have very powerful weapons (FIAT) or the enemies have loads of defense does choosing attack make any sense.
As for choosing magic... Well most DMODs don't have a sufficient focus on magic to make it worthwhile. I just hate it when a DMOD has a certain requirement for minimum strength/magic at some point in the game as usually I'll have too little of it. And levelling from level 5 to 7 just to get two magic points is not really my idea of fun.

Do I sense a bit of bitterness directed towards the Acid Rain guy?
I alternate between attack and defense with each level up.
People will have noticed I'm more of a magicman than Magicman, who is more of a Scriptman, on my side of the Dink Race videos (screen on the right).
I'll throw most of my points into magic if there's a decent spell just to decrease the cooldown and range-spam it, weapons or no. A few points do go into attack though but normally I don't have to worry about it.
Defence, I used to give it a few points. Then I took a- *explodes before Skyrim reference*

Thanks for the responses guys, it is so interesting to talk to you all
Cheat, ultimate cheat! What on earth is that?

Ultimate cheat is a downloadable file which enables you to do various things in order to make yourself the super hero Dink could never be.
As people may have noticed, I stack attack, and on rare occasions I'll put a point into magic or defense.
Protip: Keep up defense until the point where you take 1 or 0 damage from touch in a new area (if possible). Why? Because of fast enemies that you can't kite correctly. In Dink, depending on the d-mod, many enemies often drop hearts. So, if you can stand still and bundle up enemies that way you can use a melee attack to hit everything while taking barely any damage, healing yourself from hearts instantly because they drop right on top of you where you're killing stuff
This is a great thread. It's been a while since I've played anything Dink related, but I think I build up defense for a while because I'm bad at avoiding enemies, and then I probably work on magic because I like using it and I like getting the recharge time way down.
I generally go for attack, with magic as a close second depending on the D-Mod.
I like using magic and get annoyed waiting 10 minutes for hellfire to charge up.
With the normal Dink hit-and-run tactics, I say that if I can kill them quick enough then they won't have time to hurt me much, so defence is not so important.
This does not always work, but it's good enough for most D-Mods

I used to start with defense, and when it's high enough, I continue with magic. Eventually, I do everything with ranged attacks.
However, this is a pretty slow system; choosing attack at the start helps a lot speeding up the game. So lately, I'm still using the same approach, but I put several points in attack before starting to build up defense and magic.
As was written, attack eventually doesn't really do anything due to the strong weapons. So after about 3 added strength points, there's no point in leveling that up any further IMO.
In FIAT, I also put everything in defense. Then I met this boss who I couldn't seem to damage. So I thought he had a lot of defense, and my attack wasn't high enough. I restarted and put everything in strength. But it didn't help; I had to be clever instead of strong.

Thanks for all your replies, it is so interesting to see how other people play the games. Thanks also for the info on the ultimate cheat. I haven't used it yet but I am tempted. I'm still playing Cast Awakening and I am tempted in the room with the doll. Yes! I finally found the purple key, thanks to Karan42.
Naked with pizza, good reply. Hmmm the pizza maybe
