Usually I focus a lot on defense. I almost never use the bow. I've yet to find it useful. Perhaps it'd be cool if someone wrote a script that upgrade the arrows to seek out enemies. I would but that seems complicated and I don't feel like putting a whole lot of effort into anything right now.
To decide whether I upgrade strength or magic - as it's usually not both- will depend on the game. Certain dmods have very limited if any magic options and yet still allow the upgrade of magic. In those cases I put points in strength.
My belief is that there's no point in upgrading magic if you don't even get hellfire.
