Reply to looking for good antivirus program

I've just recently got my newer computer hooked up to the internet and now I'm looking for a good free antivirus program. Does anyone have any reccomendations? I've had some nasty encounters with XP antivirus on a previous computer and I'd hate for something like that to happen to this one.
