The hidden caves are often hidden behind trees and are placed against higher regions. I'm not sure what you mean in with your snow town problem. The slurpers (guys with evil tongues) are just a matter of strength and defense. There's really any technique to it, but it is almost impossible to kill these fiends in the beginning.
