Reply to Optimal Size of Sprites

Is there "rule of thumb" as to the size of sprites, especially when it comes to the creation of creatures and human like characters?
I realize that some things like landscape items are on the average, going to be larger than say Dink, like trees, boulders, and such; and your creatures are going to vary in size also.
I guess what I am trying to establish is if there is a base size to start with, so that the creation of a new or modified sprite doesn't seem out of proportion.
Hope this makes sense. I'm playing around with a program called GIMP, and trying to cr4eate some characters for a story line that I have come up with. Being that I am a relative newbie when it comes to DMOD creation and game creation, I'm not quite sure which direction to go first.
Oh yeah, is there a program that allows you to open a ".ff" directory or file? I cant seem to find too much information on these types of files.
Thanks for any and all advice or kicks in the butt.
