Ok from what i've noticed if you get to close to the water where theres no 'shallow water' you'll fall in and die...i must admit it scared and cnfused me the first time...
As for getting the boots - Have you killed the scorpian?? cause thats what ya need to do
then when you get to the island be careful of the quicksand...look at the sand carefully...you should be able to see a sorta...swirl like thing in the graphic...avoid that and you'll be cool
