I also don't think the game's difficult, so much as it's punishing. If you could save anywhere or the game had a frequent checkpoint system, getting through it would actually be very easy.

I've noticed the difficulty of games in general tends to be very exaggerated by people. Especially games from the NES-era. There are so many NES games where people say "This is one of the hardest games ever", but really, most of the time that is BS. I've recently been playing Battletoads. I've made it to level 8 so far, and is it a difficult game like everybody says? Apart from a few parts, no. Having tons of trial-and-error parts and being very punishing for failing them is not difficult; just annoying and frustrating. I've played very few games that I think are actually difficult. The Phantom Menace on PS1 gets pretty hard at points. If that game didn't have the save feature it does, it'd be the hardest game ever. Another game I remember having a hard time with is Spy Hunter: Nowhere To Run on PS2. All I remember is getting to around level 5 and it being hard as duck. It was poor enough to make me not wanna keep playing, too.
