Some of the best RPGs in the world come from the same era as Dink - Fallout 1 and Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 come first to mind... If you haven't, you must play those games.
When it comes to freeware games, I don't know... A huge amount of those seem to be using the JRPG style, like those games you mentioned. Everyone has humongous heads, and combat consists of picking actions from a list.
