Locating the MIDI's of D-Mods

Hey, all! How's it going? It's been a really long time! I recently started playing the old Dink again and got re-kindled with the game and, what's more, some of the cute and fine music pieces written for the game. Anyways, come on, guys. Group hug here.

I was wondering about these music pieces. Where exactly can you locate them? I've learned where I can find the original dink music files, but I have a slew of downloaded Dink games that contains files that I want to also access. Thanks.

Regards,
Lolita

Hi and welcome back; you were before my time here, but have a schnapps, coz that's my signature move, I guess. You can usually find any of a Dmod's music and sfx in a directory like this: D:\Dink Smallwood\srchmili\sound where D:\ is the drive containing Dink Smallwood and srchmili is the mod's directory. The soundtracks are (almost) always .wav files while the sfx are always .MIDI files.

Thanks for replying, schnapper. Sadly, however, such a drive and a file does not exist for my dink game, provided that Dink is installed in C drive on my computer. Even there, a "srchili" folder does not exist.

What computer brand and version are you using?

The soundtracks are (almost) always .wav files while the sfx are always .MIDI files.

It's the other way around, SFX is .wav, music is .mid

LC: "srchmili" was just an example; that's the folder name the dmod Search for Milli Vanilli would have. If you wanted to take a look at the music in the dmod Mystery Island, the correct folder would be "island".

Something like this, though this is just an example, the exact path on your computer might be different (depending on where you installed Dink): C:\Dink Smallwood\island\sound\

If you can find the midis in original Dink, those are in the C:\Dink Smallwood\dink\sound\ folder, right? Finding the music used in other dmods is no different, just go to the dmod's folder instead of the original game's folder.

If you're using Vista, though, you might not actually be able to see/access the dmod folders. "It's for your own safety"

Thanks for the clarification, scratcher.

(This in reference to your last statement!)

Oh!! Okay. That, I think, solves my problem: I am using Vista. I looked in the program files folder where the game is installed, and despite the fact that I have over 10 D-mods, the only folders that show ARE the original dink game and the island. Do you know if there is a way I can get pass that blockage and view these folders?

It's a problem that a lot of people have complained about. I don't have Vista myself, but try this:

Open Windows Explorer. Click the 'Organize Button' and select 'Folder and Search Options' then select the 'View Tab'.

Under 'Hidden Files and Folders' select the

'Show hidden files and folders' option.

Remove the check marks from the

'Hide extensions for known file types'

and

'Hide protected opertaing system files (Recommended'

options.

(more google searching) That probably won't fix it, but it's a first step. Check out this thread: http://petzforum.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=petztalk&action=display&thread=224

They seem to be having very similar problems. With any luck, you might find the missing dmod folders in this path: "C:, Users, *your Vista username*, AppData, Local, Virtual Store, Program Files, *Dink Smallwood*?"

If not, try this path: "C:, Users, Default, Owner, Virtual Store, Program Files, *Dink Smallwood*?"

Also, more in that post that could be helpful: Please note that all of these troubles can be solved by installing into any other place than the C:\ drive, which is the default option. Many members use "My Documents" - you can install it anywhere, as long as you don't choose C:\.

okay, people. Back on track now.

Sorry, scratcher. my user folder and it's subfolder containing my vista screen name does not contain the folders "appdata" or "default". Actually, there was an "appdata" sub-folder in my user's document folder located on my desktop, but it didn't contain the folder "Virtual store".

Also, the same documents folder contained an "ApplICATION data", but access was denied. The problem is, I check a little of here and there, and many of the folders are access-denied in the same way.

Are you running on Admin status? Could be that it would be under:

"C:\Users\YOURUSERNAMEHERE\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Dink Smallwood"

Mind you, AppData shows as a Hidden Folder, so you'll want to change the settings that were mentioned also.
But that's the location I found them under.

But I suppose it depends on which Vista you're running as well. Mine is Home Basic, though I did run Vista Ultimate for a time.
