This file explains the various types of hardness.

The file explains sprite hardness and tile hardness, how to get the best possible results for different kind of situations (such as a bridge), and gives examples (such as to clarify the difference between low tile hardness and normal tile hardness). The FAQ is quite small, but it has just the right questions.
Although it does not to pretend to be a step by step guide, you can easily use it that way; just select the part that you want to use and follow the explanation. It is detailed and handy to use. I would recommend this to anyone who has questions about hardness.

Okay... A good tutorial on hardness. It gives clear concise information about sprite hardness, who to see it, change it and it's impact with things like sp_hard() and sp_nohit() - all good stuff.

Tile hardness - also good information. Copy and pasting is detailed well - and that is now a lot easier with WinDinkEdit vers 8+. In fact that's what I use it is so fast.

Editing the existing tile hardness. Ah... this is what I'm after and it still seems undiscovered territory - although Paul has made some headway here. I remember trying to edit hardness in Isle of Croth and stuffing things up completely - then I tried again in SOB (there is one hardness setting that can actually snag the player and sometimes trip you into the wrong area - its a green hill one too which drove me nuts in SOB) and didn't have any success.

Hopefully someone will crack this last area of tile hardness in a clear and concise way one day

This tutorial is a good source for information on hardness editing. Although Paul doesn't pretend to know all the answers, the information he does provide is both insightful and useful. The following topics are covered...

Types of Hardness: Defines sprite hardness and tile hardness, the latter of which has two types; normal and low-hardness.

Sprite Hardness: Explains how to edit and apply the hardness of sprites.

Copying Hardness Tiles: Explains how to apply hardness to tiles by choosing from a list of roughly 800 different pre-drawn shapes.

Editing Hardness Tiles: Explains how to edit the hardness of tiles by hand (offers a warning on the potential problems this can create).

FAQ: Very short, but good for what it is. Explains how to make a bridge and how to make the hardness of houses.

What is this tutorial missing? In my opinion, a map of the pre-drawn hardness shapes discussed in the "Editing Hardness Tiles" section. This can be a real pain to cycle through, and the low-hard shapes appear to be blank until you stamp them on the screen, so there's no way of knowing what you're going to get until you stamp it!!
