I, Kara Gu
Seeing as the previews section is going to be deleted I figured I might as well cross post.
Kara is a child initiate of the secretive Gu enclave, a group dedicated to watching over the elemental powers. On her coming of age ceremony she is destined to become a full initiate, and the decisions she makes during her trials will determine the course of her life.
You can probably guess what this is going to be like. A collection of the stupidest D-Mod ideas I've come up with all rolled into one module. Will either never be finished or will finish me.
I've spent a week AFK, but I've just managed to fix an astonishing bug where fireballs would collide with text sprites (thank you, debug mode!) so I'm feeling pretty positive at the moment.

Just as a heads up - I ought to have a beta version ready by the end of the month, if not before. Anyone who's seriously interested in testing should put their name down here. I suspect it'll be pretty tough to test thoroughly.
ill run through it as long as its not terribly hard or something
Uh... actually it kind of is Although I've hopefully managed to keep it on the side of hard-but-fair, it's still pretty hard. One of the things I'm hoping to acquire feedback on is the difficulty curve, which bits are unfairly hard and boringly easy etc.
Two things I should probably mention - it's an action-orientated d-mod that doesn't use a standard Dink hero, and there are multiple routes through the game. Just so people know what they'd be getting into.

Of course, I'll beta test it. This d-mod rocks!
My workload isn't too bad at the moment, so I'd be willing.
Ok. I'd like to test it.
O.K, cool, I'll PM you all with the beta version address at the weekend. For everyone else, I've whacked a few screenshots up at http://notext.googlepages.com/kara . I'll finish it sooner or later.
Yes, I suck. No excuses. But I've got a beta together now, hopefully haven't broken anything putting it together, and will be PMing you shortly. I'm really at the stage of the development where I can't work in a vacuum.
Yeah, I've effed up things by ignoring a beta over the summer and not getting around to the Failure D-Mods at all... but I still may be interested in trying this out if it isn't Super Long and if I'm not Super Late.
There's no way I'm shutting you out Tal. Heck, I'd have invited you specifically if I didn't think you might be busy. Check your messages.
It's not super long, but it's kind of wide and pretty manic. Still, since there are 5 other beta testers and its still something I'm trying to finish I don't need you to play to exhaustion, just to play, try and break it where you can and give me feedback on where it's fun/boring/completely insane

O.K, a quick poll - who thinks is would be a good idea for me to include an "easy" setting?
The game is intended to be quite difficult - this is much of the appeal - but I'm wondering if I should provide a way for people who don't care about this to simply play through it. I wouldn't do anything complicated - probably just raise Kara's magic and defense a bit, seeing as the player has no real way to level up in the game.

A difficulty option would be a good idea, and maybe even a way to switch to easy mode if the player gets stuck.
But there must be no way back to "hard", and you'll get a way niftier ending when finishing on "hard".
Or something...
Or something...
Or just an incomplete ending for easy?
I remember in dragon spirit, if you played through on "easy mode", the ending was just someone waking up and saying "what a horrible nightmare" or something... That kinda pissed me off but you could do something that

A different ending for different settings is possible, but I think the kind of person who's playing for the story is likely to be just the kind of person who doesn't want to feel obligated to take up the challenge of playing on the normal/hard mode if they don't want to. What I'm thinking of doing at the moment - and this would admittedly take a lot of implementation - is constructing the game so it has a level select, but levels are only unlocked for selection once completed in the normal mode. Or something like that.
Other than that the main thing I'm worried about is trying to find female grunts for when Kara gets hit. Searching for female grunts and moans don't tend to yield very useful results!

No, but I imagine you would get interesting results.
Try searching for sound libraries first, then search for those sounds maybe?

It's not the best one I could find, and it's probably a male too, but I'd find it acceptable. Sound
Wasn't there one or two in Lyna's Story?
I finally got around to finishing up the title screen today - I'll try and get a version of it released by the end of the week. It won't have the secret levels or anything, but it's burning a hole in my hard drive at the moment.
My last major problem seems to be one of the bosses - it uses two Paul Pliska enemy shoot scripts that run concurrently, and I've obviously done something woefully inefficient because there's a noticeable lag whenever they fire an aimed shot - which is a particular issue as that boss is about as close as the game comes to bullet hell. Unfortunately I'm not sure there's anything I can do to Paul's scripts to make them run faster, even if the bosses are completely static. Hopefully I'll get them into some kind of acceptable order soon though.

Indeed, it's innovative and HARD, I really like it!
