Tiger Woods
I'm not interested in golf, but I know of Tiger woods (who doesn't?) and I found out something about his recent activities that surprised me. The first thing I found out about was that he'd be taking part in a celebrity stock car racing event here in NZ that was for charity. Then I found put that his caddy is a NZer and that Tiger went to his caddy's wedding in a small NZ town called Kumeu. Then I learned that the day before the wedding Tiger and his caddy calmed any pre-wedding jitters by playing golf at the South Head golf course. In order to get there he would of had to go through Parakai, where I used to live until I moved to the student accommodations. I know he went through Parakai, because it's the only way to South Head when coming up from Kumeu. I happened to be in Parakai visiting my mom in that day and had known nothing about it until I was back at home and read it in the newspaper the next day, though, Parakai was not mentioned, just Kumeu and the South Head Golf Course.
Given, it's a coincidence. But, it's not *that* surprising... Take a hundred people, one will win a one in a hundred chance sort of thing.
Well you don't get to see many of those conincidences. It would have been nicer if you even saw him by chance passing by.
So you were in this town (Parakai), and Tiger Woods drove through it?! Gee whizz!
I once saw this guy who looked vaguely like George Bush. Well... he had dull, listless eyes and seemed to be in a state of confusion. It's near enough for me.

Actually, Mr. Trout, I wasn't trying to make a big deal out of it. It's simply that Parakai is a tiny settlement (only 700 people) that almost never gets anyone famous or important pass through or visit. Hell, even the neighbouring town of Helensville (1,500 people) doesn't get it often. I was simply mentioning it because it is unusual. Also there are those that like to know about these sorts of things. I wanted to satisfy their hunger as well.
Actually the coincidence wasn't why I found it surprising. it was hhis going through Parakai that was surprising. that sort of thing almost never happens to Parakai. I wasn't even mentioning the coincidence as a coincidence. I was simply mentioning that I was there and I didn't even know it happened.
oh, and if you get a hundred people you won't neccedssarily get one of them getting the one in a hundred chance. You may get none, or you might get more than one. Random chances don't work on exact (otherwise it wouldn't be random)... they simply work that way on ac=verage... though on invidual times they may not do so. Dice are a perfect example of that. As any Yatzee or paper-based RPG player knows you can get a specfic number more often than 1 out of 6.

Nah. I'm not bothered by the fact that i didn't see him. I'm not a "star spotter".
Mr. Trout? Is that any way to address the future supreme leader of mankind? >-)
But, as I was saing, the odds that some specific individual will go though a small town that a person on the DN considers important isn't negligible. It might even be small. So I can't find it surprising. It's like saying I saw a moderatly famous persons face in a newspaper. It happens.
Plus, in general I'm disdainful of people taking role models. Funny, ain't it?

Well, the odds weren't anything to do with it. I was surprised because that sort of thing is rare in Parakai. It is so rare that the term "it happens" isn't very relevant to Parakai. In Parakai we hardly ever get well known people from NZ going through let alone overseas famous people. The last time was our Prime Minister came to Parakai Primary School three years ago. That's a long time between. And my Parakai standards that is a unusually short time between. That's where the surprise comes in. Rare things occuring interest me. And it was interest/curiosity that I felt more than surprise, so in fact you're actually commenting about the thing I felt less of.
I still fail to see the significance of someone going though your town. I'm guessing that several people go through your town for the first time in their lives every day. Are you surprised by each and every one of them?
What does a prime minister coming to a town have to do with anything? It's only one person, and the showing off what a good person he/she is by going to such and such town for a photo op is frankly disgusting.
People arn't rare, they are want to *seem* that way.
//Oh, and if your wondering, yes, I am jaded.

At least one member of Steppenwolf (the lead singer, I believe) has visited the Elephant Sanctuary in my hometown. Oh my goshness!
Actually the part that interested me was the unusalness of it , not who it was.
But it was only unusual because of who it was.
No. It could of been anyone famous for it to of been unusual. That it was Tiger Woods was a spefic detail. It was the unspefic detail of a famous person going through that made it u nusual. Personally golf, and thus Tiger Woods, is of little interest to me. The only golf player that interests me is the NZ player, Michael Campbell. And that's only because I like to hear when about the success, or lack there of, NZ sports players.
This thread is so lame that I cannot put words on it.
Uh... yeah. That's all I have to say.
Uh... yeah. That's all I have to say.
So what your saying is that you are interested in people if they are famous, just because they are famous?
Yeah, I mean, I once met Chris Mullin in a doctor's office... but that's nothing compared to Tiger Woods driving though a town I once lived in.
There's more to it than that. But I'm not going to try explain it again. I'm sick of trying to explain it.
I never said only NZ sports players interest me. I said I like to hear of them doing well. For example, I don't have any ineterest in Soccer, yet I like to hear of the NZ national team, the All Whites doing well, which is almost never, because they are uselss.
Well, I only really posted it in case someone was interested in hearing it.
But apparently it's not lame enough that you won't put words in it. Most intriguing, Phoenix. Most intriguing.
You see, I don't reply to many posts that are less lame than this post, thus if I were not to express my feeling of this post being lame, it would never be noticed by anyone. Therefore, my posting of its lameness is in fact a huge indicator of its relative lameness to other posts.

So, since you never reply to most topics, this a one of the better topics of the forum? Well, maybe not better, but in the top 50% or so.

I said this post was lame. Lame, so more like, in the bottom 10%. You need more sleep, Chrispy.
And just for the record, I read most, if not all topics (albeit on posts like this, it is more like skimming than reading) on this forum.

What's lame is when the US media complained that Tiger went bungy jumping in Huntly while here. They said, "He shouldn't be doing that, it's dangerous. He has a resposibility to the sport. He makes a lot of money. It'd be unfair on the sport if he died and lost that money." What a load oc crock! The unfair thing is that the US media thinks that Tiger "owes" his life to others. Everyone's life is their own to live. Besides the chances of dying on a bungy jump are astronomically low. In fact he'd be more likely to die in a car accident in NZ than die bungy jumping.
Are you sure you didn't take something completely out of context? A quote like that sounds sort of... preposterous. Any links to said complaining?
Nope. I didn't. That's what the NZ media were saying the US media said. So if anyone took it out of context it was them not me. I was just quoting from the NZ media.
Thanks. I could not supply a link myself, since I only heard about it on the TV news.
... and were too lazy to look for one.
Silly me, forgetting that having a preference for doing something else was laziness, rather than purely desire. That was sarcasm, by the way.
