Silly foolbag, .wavs will kill us all. There is probably a rather large number of Dinkers using dial-up.

I have ADSL, but after d/ling 200megs the speed decreases to 28k/s, which is fine for me.

I love .midi, it's small widely available, easy to make and doesn't sound that bad... (Even though other formats do sound better)

Any fool can use a computer. Many do.
Indeed, midi's not so bad - the worst thing that can happen is that the tune isn't your taste, but you don't risk downloading some weird funkeh vocal song that no-one likes except the author

dang you people using hardware accelerated 2d and even going beyond 16 colors.. !!11

seriously though, wavs are pervertedly big, midis are great, but they've done their thing, oggs are small and nice for music.

the "think of us modem-users"-card has been pulled way too many times, complain to the few companies that do not provide the norm that is broadband.

Actually in XP the loading times for .midi are longer than the loading times for .wav, in Dink that is. Some engine bug

Another thing I didn't think to mention earlier: It seems much easier to stumble across decent, free midi music online than it is to find good .wav tunes. We also have few (like two or three) people in the community that compose midis. Noone that I know around here makes .wav-based music.

people here who make their own midi or wavs are as rare as those who make their own full sets of graphics.

in my own small and humble opinion, I think it's quite bad for quality to just take any random online found midi to put in a dmod.

Your point being? Wow, we're taking a real step forward in original sound and graphics... oh wait... this unfinished D-Mod was released several years ago!

"I think it's quite bad for quality to just take any random online found midi to put in a dmod."

Wow, you're brilliant. I do think it would be better for quality if He or She Who Hunts For Midis listened to a good variety and contemplated what would fit. Some people are capable of that... if I remember correctly, redink1 found a few good Midi suppliers while building Initiation, and I seem to remember the music from that being good. Or at least, better than "Hey look everyone it's Chrono Trigger/FF7 music I'm real creative pour me a cup of beans!"

I think I screened a few thousand midis for Initiation... finding music that matches what you're going for is very difficult.

Obviously if you're multitalented and industrious enough to produce your own music then you're going to end up with more distinctive results. The same goes for the graphics. Of course, why stop there? Make your own game engine that's more ideally suited to your vision than anything else out there. If you can do all that in any kind of reasonable time frame then I'm truly envious of you, not least because you're probably about to sell it for big pocket money.

For lesser beings like me, midi music is extremely useful. It's availiable, it's applicable (Final Fantasy music is overapplied because it's easy to apply, and you know what to put where to achieve a particular mood if you're a lazy sod), it's doesn't exclude the player (you can't assume people have broadband - things get better every year, but some areas just can't get it yet), which pretty much makes it better than wav in every respect apart from audio quality. Can you even attach wav sounds to maps in Dinkedit? It doesn't really matter how much you dislike midi music, as far as Dink is concerned midi won't go away.

Of course, moving away from Dink (this is the off-topic section, after all), anyone with a website that plays a midi file really does deserve to die in a slow and excruciatingly painful manner, possibly involving power lines and sombreros. So I agree

Unfortunately enough I'm an artist by profession, but a programmer too, so I can and do write my own engine, and music isn't something unfamiliar too.

guess I'm just multitalented or whatever you call it.

I agree with Arik with that part with the website.I mean WHO LIKES TO HEAR MIDI'S ON A WEBSITE.Especialy the ones with black or some freaky purple background and neon letters.Or even better-with some picture tiled in the background....sheesh

But i also like to say, that sometimes it gets me frustrated, that there are midis in DMODS that absolutely don't fit there. Like "i'm the scatman" and other pop classics. But this is out of the question, the midi format has nothing to do with CHOOSING the right music for your DMOD.I think that midi music fits Dink.I can't imagine it with real music,it would be just not the same, espiacialy if you add lyrics.

Anyways midis are quite useful for me,because in midis you can clearly hear when wich instrument joins in,so i think midis are useful in helping covering songs.Me and my bass player listen to midis of the songs we play and it's helpfull...

I hate too many wav's, it makes the game take forever too load.
Also, I usually get sick of the music and just turn the volume off after a while.
It would be nice to have a lil' button though, one that could turn music on or off during game play.

No... it just means I foresaw the future and how it would annoy RS, and thusly, added "scatman" to my only dmod.

Hey Scatman was fun...the first time you heard it...after that you just wanted to shoot whoever made the song and put it in a D-Mod.
