Well... I think I'm about done working on the Generation 8 design for the site. Thanks to everyone who submitted comments. Right now, I think its a tad better than the current design... hopefully you do too.

And now I have to work on Miasma v2. Joy.

Looks great for the most part, but what's with the interlaced title image? (the black lines)

I really don't know, heh. I just felt it needed 'something'... and interlacing just seemed like a good idea.

I didn't say anything for those earlier designs. The current design of Generation 8 looks nice, but not as redink1 originally intended to "make DN brighter".

Two late suggestions here though:

1. If I remembered correctly, redink1 wanted G8 to look like "more professional". One of the most common design features that most news web sites are having is to set up the page with 800x600 resolution. That would leave some empty space on the right side, but it would still be better than the current design under highest resolution.

2. The double option columns are also one of the most common design features. However, using the same type of floor background makes the design not so great. Also, it would be better if the left option column can expand all the way to the end of the page.

3. If possible, it might (I said MIGHT) be better to have only one or two news items with descriptions shown in the home page. The older news items would appear differently with only clickable title. The current design still makes DN to look like a message board. This way, you may add some other features to the site.

Of course, as someone said earlier, this site is your site. You can do whatever you want. People won't stop coming because of the design. (It's also true the other way around. ) So it's up to you to see if you want to make any more changes...

Here's my 2 cents:

it's really nice, but pretty similar to the current design. I don't like the interlacing of the top image at all. It's also too small on high resolution. I love the sword and images in the text area though! I think you should specifiy a font for the main text as it doesn't have one yet.

Overall, much better than current design

You can read the text better, and it's more surveyable.

But you don't see Dink anymore on top; it's a bit too detailed I guess.

Ack!! Noooo! Puhleaseeee don't make me click if I want to see more than 2 news items! I come to TDN to see at a glance what's going on, and if anything new has been released. If I have to click to read news I'll be stuck in wait mode more often than not eeeeek.

Pretty nice, but the sword is a bit... short! I don't like the black stripes either. I think you should connect the right bar with the top bar... With a black border.

Maybe you can try making the upper-right corner black?

Right now, mostly everything (except the news, poll, board, and comments) runs on 'Miasma', which is basically a heavily modified addition to DBMan, a flatfile database thingy by Gossamer Threads.

Miasma v2 is going to be the underlying code to TDN, except it will be written (mostly) from scratch, and use MySQL to make things faster and less error-prone.

So, basically... everything will change, and yet it will mostly look like it does now, except with the new design.

I'm a man, but I can change, if I have to.I guess.
Here's my 2 cents, and it won't take too long (hopefully) to implement

Why not have the Icons like news and new files have thouse pop up text box thinges that appear if you hold the cursor over them for 2-3 seconds. If you want an example, and not more bad explanations, move your cursor over an icon at http://slashdot.org/

It would'nt help anyone thats been there for a while, but some newbies might find that helpfull
