Some silly hobbit said that most people see black & white and gray shaded dreams and don't see colourful dreams.

Do you?

I have color dreams. I've heard its the B&W ones you forget, and the color ones you remember, but how could you know?
An author named Castenada said (erm, wrote.) if you can control yourself in dreams and make them lucid you can do 'out of body' things.
I doubt it, but I know life can get weird.....

ric whats the title of that book that that quote is from because i know a circle of kids that passed a "lucid dreams" book around and would debate about that all the time at parties

I'm not sure which book, it was a long time ago I read that series. Could be 'A yaqui way of knowledge'.
Contraversial books those. Real or not , very thought provoking. Castanada is an anthropologist who submitted the first book as his thesis. Much of what is described is too incredible to believe, yet new discoveries in physics used to seem just as unlikly.
I may need to re-read them.

VERY cool. I can usually control my dreams, but never have I realized that's a way to start haunting people.

I have dreams in colour, and while I can wake myself up at will (when I'm dreaming), I can't actually control my dreams.

I noticed that scratcher spelt the word "colour" the correct way

Anyhow, I dream in both B/W and COLOUR both; usually they are scary dreams, so I try to avoid sleeping to much.

to sleep perchance to dream?

Yeah "colour" is right the way just like Bloody Sunday, since they were both done by the british. Anyway, I guess I've never heard of dreams being in black/white and/or limited colors. I don't remember my dreams all that well since they don't make any sense.

RGB is used for display, not CMYK. CMYK is used for typesetting.

"And I don't dream. Is that a bad thing?"

Is dreaming not intrinsically linked (or so they believe) with REM sleep? Which is the most important part of sleep for "recharging", as it were.

So it probably is a bad thing.

Lucid dreaming is an interesting subject. There's a lot of info on it in the Lucid Dreaming book at the WikiBooks site.

Is dreaming not intrinsically linked (or so they believe) with REM sleep? Which is the most important part of sleep for "recharging", as it were.

No. Dreaming can occur at any time during the night, usually during NREM and REM stages of sleep. NREM dreams are lighter and similar to daydreaming. REM dreams are where nightmares and heavier dreams happen.

And as for "recharging", that is only partially true. REM is the most important part of sleep, and it takes about two and a half hours to pass through the other four stages of sleep. However, say you wanted to take a nap. If you were to awaken from NREM stages of sleep (delta and theta), you would feel groggy. Time spent in REM is little during the first 4 hours, but gradually increases through the night. This is why you should either nap for 15 minutes, or for 2.5 hours.

As for dreaming in *color* and no color (we don't dream in black and white), color dreams are usually more prevalent. Dreams are perceived to be black and white because our brain isn't focused on color. Say you had a dream of being on a magic carpet. Most people would dream about the scenery, and thus, in color. Now say you were a fashion designer with the same dream. You would probably be more concerned with what shirt you were wearing, and thus, be dreaming with no color [information].

Now, when I say I don't dream, I mean that I don't dream *often*. I have had dreams, but they are usually once a month. And it is actually quite nice since I don't have to spend all of next morning trying to figure out what the hell my brain was doing.

I've heard you have like 10 dreams each time you sleep, but you only remember the last dream, and only when you woke up while dreaming.

Well, it's because you didn't wake up during REM.

And magicman: You can have more than one dream and remember more than one, but you don't have to wake up while dreaming (though it does help with memory).

I attempted lucid dreaming last night. I didn't succeed (I didn't realize I was dreaming when I was), but I remember my dream(s). Quite cool. They say it's all about practice, so I'm gonna try again tonight.

Ummm... I would beg to differ Merlin.

"Recharging" is not the most eloquent, nor the most accurate term to have used, so I'm sorry about that. But I can't think of another one...

Now, nobody can be sure of WHY we dream, or what part the stages of sleep play in this, but a few studies for you to look at...

Jouvet deprived cats of REM sleep (by making them stand on an upturned flowerpot in water). They went all "hypersexual" (man... that must have been odd to watch) before dying; Possibly due to anxiety.

If we lose out on REM sleep, our bodies will try to make up for it. Dement (1960) took 8 volunteers and woke them every time they begun entering REM sleep. The first night, this occured 12 times, but by end of the week, they were trying to enter REM sleep 26 times a night.
Does this not suggest that REM sleep is vital to our "recharging"?

Another theory for dreaming, is Reverse-Learning Theory (by Crick and Mitcheson, 1983). The goes that dreaming is a way of getting rid of useless information in our brains.
Now, animals with very large cortexes do not have REM sleep (such as dolphins and anteaters). It has been considered that this means they do not need to "unlearn" to function correctly.

Now, when I say I don't dream, I mean that I don't dream *often*.

Hehehe.
