Can't control the game
I have problems to control the game. At the start screen the "Dink arrow" drags to the left. If I'm quick with the mouse or the gamepad it's possible to hit the Start or the Quit button. In the game Dink runs uncontrolled to the left until a sprite stops him.
As far as I remember this happens because of two things - too old DirectX and something more, which I don't remember. Anyone who can help me what to do? (Of course DirectX 9 is installed, so don't waste your time by telling me that )

Try either calibrating your gamepad or joystick (by moving it in all possible directions before starting the game), or unplugging it before you start.
Well, this is weird.....
I have a simple Gravis Game Pad Pro (like a Playstation pad with L & R buttons) which never has been necessary to calibrate, or install from the CD. Just to plug it into the gameport (not USB) and run with supported games. However I followed your advice and calibrated it, and it worked. Thank you!
Unfortenately the L & R buttons do not work. That means I can't get the menu up. To quit the game I have to press ALT+TAB to minimize and then CTRL+ALT+DEL to shut the game down. If I want to save in different slots, I can't choose a slot because there is no button for the menu.
I have unplugged and disconnected the pad, and restarted the computer several times in several orders. It still works with no left-speed-runs but also with no working L & R buttons.....
Sorry if being off-topic, but this started when I was going to replay Dink on my "brand new" computer. Any more suggestions ?

Bizarre. You can hit Escape to bring the menu up, so you shouldn't have to use Alt-tab or Ctrl-alt-delete.
Oh, and does your gamepad have a switch on the back? Try changing it and see if anything changes.

No, it is not USB. Do you also have problmems?
I didn't know that the same gamepad excisted in both USB and a regular gameport...

I have black USB version and a white gameport version.
Thank's, at least a relief with the Escape button.
And yes, there is a switch on the back of the pad. But it does not help.

1) Does your sound work?
2) Does it work with other joysticks?
If either of these are false, upgrade your audio driver.

Answer for "CookieCutter" :
I have both unplugged and disconnected the pad several times. It did not help.
Answer for "merlin" :
1) Well, in Dink the sound effects - like punching etc works - but there is no music playing. In other games and in Windows sound effects as well as music works.
2) I also have a Sidewinder game pad which seems to work okey with Dink. But the Gravis pad works with other games, so I don't think it's broken anyhow......
Another strange thing is that the main Dink game is "very speedy" on my new pretty fast computer. The DMOD's of course also runs faster, but in a more normal way. Can it be some hardware conflicts between a new computer and the "old" Dink game?
I have played Dink for years on my old PC and never runned into trouble......

yeah, you have to reinstall something from the windows disk. not sure about your operating system, but i had this exact same problem with windows 98. the sad thing is, i dont remember how to fix it. i know i didnt use sfc... but i remember reinstalling some audio and video stuff from the windows 98 cd.
There's not very much you can do except to disable hardware accelleration (and you don't really want to do that). Other than that, wait for Windemere.
Hey, merlin, are you one of Sabre's clones?
Sabre: used to advertise his DMods whenever possible. These DMods took a looong time to finish.

Yet if he were one of my clones, he would give vague details about it, instead of actual information.
