If you don't have an account, just leave the password field blank.
Bizarre. You can hit Escape to bring the menu up, so you shouldn't have to use Alt-tab or Ctrl-alt-delete.
Oh, and does your gamepad have a switch on the back? Try changing it and see if anything changes.
