Your first program....

I presume that not all, but some dinkers will have previously (or maybe now) programmed in another way, such as C, C++, Basic etc.

I throw this nostalgic question to you all : What was your first piece of programming?

Mine was on an old amstrad, and along with Arik (when I was knee high to a grasshopper) created a very simple text based adventure, using BASIC, by the name of "Fantasy World". You had to go and kill the Goblin king, and I really enjoyed it.

We started on a sequel, but it fizzled out, as we tried to make it too complicated for our little brains to understand.

One day, I want to remake that classic quest, though probably not with Dink (But I dunno how else to).

So what was everybody's first program?

well, I did some simple stuff in qbasic when I was 8 *gasp*... when i was 10 I did an 'engine' intepreting files for items and worldpieces to put together a working rpg, not so advanced, but still! I was proud about it..

Depends... lol.. I started experimenting with QBasic at the age of 9.. and I started making simple input/output programs like "Enter name and address" and stuff, and then it would show on a screen... but my first real program must've been an installer I made using QBasic, PKZip, zip files and a file.lst file that listed all the files in the zip and where they were to end up.. heh.. cool now that I think back on it. My program was sort of a shell to the PKZip program, serving as a progress meter for the installation.

Destroying noobs since 1999.
I started programming in C++ 4 years ago (approx) and since then I now know the following languages (listed from when learned).

Java, HTML, C++, Direct X, VB, perl

I wish I knew more but oh well.

Daniel, there are clowns.
Gee, I've got squat experience compared to alot of people here. I, coming from hickville, didn't get exposed to programming (C++) till high school. But that's pretty lucky, considering the overwhelming majority of high schools in the area don't even have a programming course. I suppose I could have always tried to learn it on my own before high school, but at that age, that really wasn't something I wanted to spend my time on.

Hmm... now that I think about it, I did program a Lego robot in Junior High, but I'm not sure if that counts considering how simple it was.

Python all the way!!!

(the prequel to which was C, then C++, Lisp, a bit or ruby, PHP, MySQL, and HTML, whioch i really don't count.)

I once made a halfased 2-player S.0.S. q-basic game that topped 225k. I had subs within nested subs within subs that called back on the original subs. And I only used doloop/fornext loops, and if then statements. Took me 85 hours.

I've been using BASIC in some form practically as long as I can remember. First on ATARI, then BASICA, then QBasic, now VB. But I have no idea what my first program was.

I guess I started programming in HTML Which was very easy after I went out and bought a 20 odd pound book. Looking back, I shouldn't have bought it... nevermind though...

Anyway, I then programmed in DinkC Which as you know isn't hard and you all know it anyway!

I then had a sudden craze for programming in C/C++ and once again bought a book on learning it. I still study C++ as I've left C but to study C++ is now hard as I have NOT GOT MICROSOFT VISUAL C++! AND! I don't have BroadBand so I can't download it... Awe s**t...

I later found a clone of Visual Basic and began to learn a bit about that...

The first programs and stuff I made were... in order...

A website - HTML

D-MODS - DinkC

Frenchie Numbers - C++

Frenchie Words - C++

Kill the frenchies - C++

Mystery Texts - Visual Basic Using VB Clone

Mystery Texts And Pictures - Same as above

Heehee, that's it really! I also know some PSDL that is used in creating cities for MM2. That doesn't really count though does it...

if you're looking for a free compiler, get gcc for windows. free, and it works! does C/C++, pascal, and a few other things, if you get plugins for it. it is NOT an IDE though, there are free ones of those as well

*SIGH*, one day I wanna learn C++, just so I can get back to the fantastic days of text adventures, and I can recreate "Fantasy World".

BASIC was fun, but can anyone give me some simple tutorials on how to program in C++? I'll probably get Dethlord to help, but I think I got C++ on CD somewhere (or some variatoin of it) so I can get back to those golden days.

I must say Jamie (don't take this the wrong way), that surely all of those programs have been in the last couple of years, simply because, being only 12, more then that and your brain couldn't handle it.

I can't remember the exact age I started learning BASIC, I think it was a VERY gradual process from using my ZX Spectrum (The best comp EVER : Did anyone else have GhostBusters or Thundercats?) which progressed from when I was only about 4 till I was 15, thoughI never desired to learn much beyond text adventures.

Sabre, they are simple programs that are done in hours, I have done them all this year, but started studying some of the languages at 11

O.k then, I was just wondering. But you missed the days of basic, and I only caught the very end. I WISH I was born in the bedroom coding revolution!

I'll teach the basics of python, which is soooo much cooler than C. It;s easy to use, powerfull, Object oriented, you dont have to compile it (but you can), there is heaps of documentation online, a few free books for it, comes with heaps of plugin modules... email me if you want some help...
