Kingdom Come: Deliverance

Inspired by Punisher's recent game thread, I thought I'd make a thread about this upcoming game I just found out about a while ago, as I'd like to think there are people on this site who'd be interested.

The game's called Kingdom Come: Deliverance, developed by Warhorse Studios. It's advertising itself with the slogan "Dungeons & No Dragons", aiming to create a realistic medieval RPG, with the map (which according to Warhorse is around the size of Oblivion's map) built on actual Czech locations. The gameplay seems like improved Skyrim, mixed with some elements of Red Dead Redemption. It also throws in some elements from The Sims, with the player having to sleep, eat, wash his clothes etc. to survive. The graphics, even while currently unfinished, are looking gorgeous and there's a new, realistic combat system that looks to be amazing. Especially the large scale battles and castle sieges look incredible, with the player being thrown on the battlefield to survive. Unlike with Skyrim, their goal doesn't seem to be to create a game that throws constant quests and dungeons at the player, but instead they're trying to have quality over quantity. There's also going to be a lot of minigames, where you actually play them instead of just clicking in a choice menu. The NPCs have their daily routines and seem to be the most realistic NPCs I've seen in a game to-date. There aren't any classes for the player to choose from, but instead the choices he makes during the game effect his skills/reputation, with no turning back. There also aren't any spells or monsters, to add to the realistic medieval setting they are trying to achieve.

The most amazing thing about this game, however, is that it was so far mostly developed by a group of only 30 people (recently grown to a group of 70), and it is completely funded by private investors and Kickstarter.

I'm not much of a gamer these days, but gotta say that this one looks to be amazing, and I'll be a sure buyer when it comes out. It has everything that Skyrim did right, but it fixes/removes things I didn't enjoy in Skyrim, as well as adding a ton of stuff. It even shares some elements with Dink, having 16 equippable slots, haha. And I think it's nice to see a medieval game that tries to be just a medieval game, for once. Instead of taking the easy way out and going with the typical dragon/monster/fireball fantasy stuff that we've seen far too many times. Furthermore, it just seems like this is a labour of love for the creators, and not just a way to make money, which always makes for better games.

Currently it's set to come out in late 2015, so everything online is just a very early version, and it already looks amazing. But you can also get an early beta or alpha version this Autumn, if you pledge money for the project.

So yeah, just thought I'd share this, as it looks to be an incredible, even revolutionary game. And Dink's a medieval game, so there are probably people on this site who'd be interested. Any thoughts?

Oh yeah, I remember reading the Kickstarter for this. It sounded über-düper ambitious, and I'm not at all sure they'll be able to pull it off in such a way that the result will be actually good. It's certainly interesting, though. Just that it won't have magic in it alone is incredibly refreshing.

I guess there's always the problem with games like these not to deliver 100% what they're saying. They even said themselves that that's always the problem with Kickstarter projects. But from what I've seen on recent updates, it looks very promising (especially with Warhorse adding more staff). They seem to now have everything sorted out and can finally start focusing on making an enjoyable game instead of figuring stuff out. I think it's also important not to have too high hopes. If they manage to get anywhere close to what they're promising, I'll be a happy camper.

They abuse peoples goodwill and release crap.

Here my philosophy YOU FINISH THE GAME AND I BUY AND OWN THE GAME DONE!

Actually I agree with Punisher here. Unfinished screenshots amount to nothing, you simply don't know if the final product will be good. I certainly won't buy anything if it hasn't first been reviewed somewhere.

I didn't know about this project. It sounds a bit overly ambitious in the trailer, as if they wanted to do everything. You're better off doing one thing properly than dozens of things in a mediocre way. Having said that, if this ends up being a good single player RPG it is going to be very welcome. And the no magic route seems appealing as well.

I love kickstarter. It makes the development possible of games that don't fit the current marketspace. This game doesn't exactly look like a game that doesn't fit the marketspace, but I'm sure the development of such a game takes a lot of time and money. I think they're on track to fulfill many of their promises, but they'll probably falter here and there.

I have nothing against Kickstarter myself (though I have no plans to personally use it), as it can be a great tool. Sometimes great games come out of Kickstarter but it's just as possible to help fund a game just to have it abandoned or be released unfinished or poorly made. So you must always be wary when looking at a Kickstarter, and never take the ambitions of the developers as givens. (All that said, I hope this project works out too.)

Agreed, and even big companies with lots of practice tend to falter on at least some of their promises (or even worse, lie...).

You guys should look at some of their other updates too. The trailer is half a year old by now, and the game has improved a lot since then. They already have pretty much everything the trailer promises, just not in a finished state. Which is to be expected, since they have a minimum of year and a half left of developing. They've already been developing the game for two years, and the people at Warhorse have a lot of experience behind them. They've also got some big deals going on already, so they definitely know what they're doing.

The Kickstarter wasn't actually to fund the game (although it also did a bit of that). Warhorse had an agreement that if they could raise 500,000 dollars, their private investor would trust that there's demand for the game, and would continue funding them. The Kickstarter reached over a million dollars. Kickstarters are always risky, yes, but these guys are taking the attitude that since they get to create the game they've always wanted to, thanks to the donators, they now owe us a great game.

This game doesn't exactly look like a game that doesn't fit the marketspace, but I'm sure the development of such a game takes a lot of time and money.

Actually, believe it or not, they said that they couldn't get any traditional publishers because of fears that a game without dragons and magic wouldn't sell. This is when their private investors stepped in. But since the private investors doubted this too, the Kickstarter was put up to see if there'd be demand for the game. Which, as proven by the million dollars, there indeed is.

I disagree.
You can try mount n blade: warband. There is also a new game in development, bannerlord. Although it is in development for last 7 years or something.
