What new things would you like to see in a D-Mod?
The "most influential D-Mod" thread made me think of this. What kinds of innovations do you wish you could see in future D-Mods? I mean things like new kinds of story themes or graphics or gameplay ideas. Of course, this overlaps with DD's question about new protagonists, but I wanted to cast the net broadly because I think it helps people spark each other's ideas.
Horses. Definitely horses. The kind that you can mount. But not in the fabulous way.
Well, new sprites could be useful (Which is why I'm focusing on making sprites).
Also, improvements to the game engine and a way for programming inept people like me to make functioning D-mods (And hopefully, good ones). Though the latter of the two would be very difficult to achieve, unless someone's a programming savant or something. But I digress.
Other cool things would be new ideas, new weapons, and (in my opinion) lots and lots of funny easter eggs that you have to go and look for it, but would be worth looking for.
(Ooh, also, new Midis. Custom made ones. I actually got this midi makes called 'Anvil Studio'. Though, no matter how many times I mess around with it, I'm not getting much. Yay for random poking around to see if something happens!)

Mounting animals, in a fabulous way or not, would be great. I wish I'd have the graphics for that. I really hope MsDink will finish her pig riding graphics...
I use FL studio for making midis, but I'm exclusively making Halo ones to fit my sprite.
All-around well refined atmosphere- preferably a new setting of environment. The original grass setting gets so dull in the long run.
If it makes you feel any better in the new Dmod i'm making every tile is gonna be different.
Just about.
Just about.
Ooh! New Game + would be an interesting thing to implement in a D-mod.

I think this was already done in one of the dmods, but, storing items in a chest is a nice thing. Cities, actuall cities. Walled, crowded high buildings with stone roads, towers and parks. This is mapping mostly, but meh... you wanted an opinion, so now deal with it!
New graphics can make a big difference, especially new enemy graphics. That's a big reason why SimonK's stuff is so fun. Plus, providing the author is willing, they make a great resource for future d-mods.
But I also like subtler things, like new spells and clever scripted puzzles and quests. They don't need to be hard, just interesting. For instance one that sticks out in my mind, I think this was in Fiat, there was a guy who hated pillbugs. So to get the upper hand over him, you had to collect some pillbug eggs and sneak them into his basement. There wasn't much to it, but it was funny and totally original.

More cameo apperences and references to real life.

They're long finished and working beautifully and that was a secret meta !! sigh lol

GIVE THEM TO ME! I WILL USE THEM!

Funny thing is, you can ride pigs in MInecraft as well. So which came first?

As long as we've got Dink Smallwood questing around it would be Dink, just with a bearable engine.

Actually, there are some Doom mods that take the Quake engine and replace the original Doom engine with it. Some of the YT videos I've seen made it look pretty good, and it kept the original game as it was.
Having a new, better engine that could improve on the original game, as well as the D-mods, would still keep the game true.
EDIT: Just had this idea. A D-mod with two playable characters that you switch between. (Could be Dink and Lyna.) Dink would focus mostly on direct combat with weak spells and the other character could focus on ranged combat with weak melee attacks.

Are your sure you don't mean Jack and Jill?

New enemies would be great, but enemies that fit in with the overall Dink aesthetic. Some new graphics look great but just don't quite gel, which is a shame.
More interesting enemies is important. Too many d-mods rely on the stock bad guys from the original game and the author often doesn't have the scripting ability to dramatically change the way you fight them. Enemies that do new and interesting things are always nice to see.
New spells are great. I've always thought of magic as being very hard to balance in Dink and I'd love to see more innovative spells being implemented.

Been trying to get a few things working for FoD myself. Firespin is certainly the best defensive spell I've rewritten, (originally Rabidwolf's spell, and he assisted with most of the re-writing. I've been tweaking bits to fix the lag it causes).
As to new Enemies, I've used some alternative graphics to the vanilla ones, still trying to get a lot of the scripts fixed due to my laziness in simply getting the scripts written and not thoroughly checking them all...
But enough hyping the distant future beyond the appocalypse; Personally I would like to see more in-depth storyline and other Dmodder's takes on the overall lore, how they see each D-mod interlinking with the original story. I mean its entirely possible, and one of the things which inspired my decision to start working on the one I've been making.

I tried this once in the past but I just couldn't remember all the d-mods that I'd played well enough to make it work. If you're doing this, I'm pretty excited about seeing the result^^

There are some ties between FoD and the original Dink, as well as the few ties (e.g Map faces with no meaning as opposed to FB3) and the one previously mentioned in another thread cameo from CC2 (Jack & Jill) and other Dmods.
Much of the cameo material is unrelated to the main story, and only the already mentioned and discussed CC2 one has been added to the main story variable just to showcase the fact that cameo appearances are going to occur. everything else is randomly scripted or will be in the secret areas, so there's an extra sense of achievement from when players find such secret bonuses and stat boosts.
I've also yet to decide which specific Dmods are going to get cameo-appearanced characters (as well as some of the permission-asking. This sort of thing has been discussed before, as I've said by the way, in one of the FoD dev threads.)

Yeah, that's what I've been thinking in the back of my mind too. I like seeing discussions in the forum about various aspects of the history of Dink's world and things like the climate. I don't usually think about those things when I'm playing, but it's interesting to hear people's thoughts on them. It deepens my experience of the game.

Exactly, Dinkulum!
Plot and storyline are one of the things that drive so many players to certain games, like good old Dink, Final Fantasy, Zelda, and other RPG style games.

Zelda has no plot and story... Next thing you'll tell me Mario has a plot and story
Actually, they do. You see... (Long rant about LoZ storylines and split timelines.) And that, my friends, is where babies come from.
Plumber sees giant Gorilla steal princess based on Japanese game developers fantasies about Madonna. Gorilla, called Donkey Kong (donkey = arse/ fool, Kong = giant Gorilla) takes princess to his castle presumably with intention to bonk, plumber (formerly known as jumpman for obvious reasons) must save Madonna's virginity by navigating Kong's treacherous castle as Kong rains down barrels from his perch.
