The Enneagram

The Enneagram! It's a nine-pointed shape. But also a personality system! With nine personality types. Take one of these tests and tell us what you are! I bet it will explain a lot of what goes on around here. Just take the first test in the first link if you can't decide.

http://www.eclecticenergies.com/enneagram/test.php

http://www.enneagraminstitute.com/Tests_Battery.asp

I'm a 9. That means I like to get along with everyone. I also have a lot of 5, which means I'm a hermit who likes to do lots of research.

You are most likely a type 4 or 9.

Taking wings into account, you seem to be a 8w9 or 9w8.

Yeah, I know it's confusing to have numbers for personality names. Here are some type descriptions:

http://www.enneagraminstitute.com/descript.aspnull

http://www.9types.com/

And yeah, I was guessing 8 for you. They, uh, tend to like confrontation. 9 I'd have trouble seeing, but 4 is interesting. They like to be unique.

The enneagram is not scientific.

The most scientifically validated model of personality is the big 5 (extraversion, neuroticism, conscientiousness, agreeableness, openness). Of the 5, extraversion and neuroticism are the most important.

The Myers-Briggs model is much more respectable than the enneagram but it's still not a great model. It's crude to describe things in terms of how "scientific" they are so I'll try to be more specific:

a) the Myers-Briggs model is based on old psychology (Carl Jung) that was based on very weak methodology relative to contemporary psychology
b) some assumptions of the Myer-Briggs model have been found to be wrong, such as the assumption of personality types (a person is either an extravert or an introvert, not somewhere in between)
c) the Myers-Briggs model and tests are poor psychological measures when judged by modern theories of psychological measurement (psychometics)
d) a lot of stuff which is attached to the Myers-Briggs model is just hogwash. The personality profile descriptions are just made up and are vague. Claims of how the personality types interact and form relationships are just speculation (and are wrong)

The enneagram is not scientific.

They're working on that. The results will be debated, of course, but at least they aren't ignoring the need for scientific study. But for the ways I use the Enneagram, it isn't really important for it to be scientific. I primarily use these kinds of personality systems to help me notice things about myself. I find that while they haven't been rigorously tested, they tend to be densely insightful in ways that seem true when I observe myself by them. I know that doesn't constitute evidence, however.

My brief glances at the Big Five didn't make it seem as insightful or useful to me, so I haven't paid much attention to it yet, though I plan to give it another look someday because I'm sure I've missed a few things.

The results won't be debated because nothing has been published in the scientific literature about the enneagram.

I really just want to point out that when you read stuff like this:

"Thus, each type has a particular way of coping with the dominant emotion of its Center. We can briefly see what this means by examining each type, Center by Center. In the Instinctive Center, Eights act out their anger and instinctual energies. In other words, when Eights feel anger building in them, they immediately respond to it in some physical way, raising their voices, moving more forcefully. Others can clearly see that Eights are angry because they give themselves permission to express their anger physically. "

That the author is just pulling it out of their arse. Maybe they have very insightful buttcheeks, but that doesn't change where it is coming from.

Curiously, looking at the page dinkulum linked, the enneagram will/is validated by the methods they use to the extent it resembles the big 5. It's too hard to explain why that is true here though, but I'm quite amused. They should be using a different mathematical model.

I really meant debated in the public at large, but that's a good point.

Could you name the model they should be using? That sounds interesting. Also are you talking about the Sara Scott dissertation or the SHL studies or both?

They should produce their own model based on the assumptions the enneagram makes. This makes more sense than taking psychometric assumptions that are not necessarily consistent with the enneagram. Their model should include all the things that make the enneagram distinct from other models, such as people have 'wings' (people are more similar to the types close to them than far), the way that types are affected by stress, etc. If they could just show that people classified as a certain type are relatively high on nearby types and low on far types that would be enormous support.

I fail to see how some static questions where you tick a box of choices with no other input or variables from the participant is ever likely to come close to naming the complexity of a human psyche and definately not in one sentance or so. I don't really give a flying squirrel crap about the scientificness of some personality test, but I must say I did not like this one... It did give me the "type" that probably fits best, but none of those 9 really do. To date, the most scarily accurate summaration of my personality I've read was my horoscope on some site- which is probably the most unscientific and nonsensical method imaginable for determining something like that.

I find that by "stereotyping" myself as catered for by these sort of tests to be helpful for me, because I am rather organised at the best of times. Stereotypes help one deal with problems quickly and effectively.

I fail to see how some static questions where you tick a box of choices with no other input or variables from the participant is ever likely to come close to naming the complexity of a human psyche and definately not in one sentance or so.

Some might treat the tests that way, but the approach I take is to look at them as a starting point. The test is just a clue to which type(s) you fit the best, and then you can read the type descriptions to get a better idea. Some tests have come closer to the types I seem to be than others.

Tests by themselves aren't that helpful anyway as type descriptions because they're so abbreviated, as you pointed out. As I see it, with personality typologies like Myers-Briggs and the Enneagram, you can think of a personality type as a complicated, 3-dimensional web of traits that are tied together naturally. If you have certain traits in the web, you're likely to have others. So the tests pick out a few of those traits that can be used to distinguish between the types. Then you read the type descriptions to get the fuller picture.

But even if it were scientifically validated, I wouldn't even take the whole Enneagram system (or the Big Five or anything else) to be a complete description of a person. They're just angles to look at a personality from. They show you some things and not others. So I like to learn about a variety of them.

These kinds of tests are always interesting, but people can vary so much within the results. Two people can have exactly the same test result and yet still be very different to each other.
