Septerra Core (Or, a topic about old games in general)
(I accidentally posted this topic before even writing a message. Oops!)
Those of you interested in RPGs or especially JRPGs may like to know that Septerra Core, a well-regarded PC game from several years ago, is on sale for $2.39 (USD) on the Good Old Games service today. (edit: removed prior link, sale price on that item is over, though something else may be on sale as you are reading this: GOG Home)
I can't attest to the greatness of the game itself, since I never did get around to purchasing it after playing the demo so many years ago, but I will be purchasing it now and hopefully playing it soon. It's also worth noting that this is part of a series of daily discounts from GOG running through July 25, I think.
What are some of your favorite old video games, particularly on PC?

I have two favourite old games. And that's Kings Quest IV: The Perils Of Rosella and Dink Smallwood.
Heh, I gave Septerra Core to a friend because I didn't care much for it. He said it was pretty good.
Lets see... good old PC games...
Well, there's famous stuff like Deus Ex, TIE Fighter, Wing Commander, Half-Life, and it's expansions.
There are also a few more obscure games like:
Anachronox - This is about as close to a Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy RPG there's ever going to be. It's an excellent blend of humor and galaxy-saving epicness with JRPG combat system. I couldn't recommend this game enough, though I have not gotten it to run on Multi-core computers.
Dark Sun: Shattered Lands - Like more modern party-based D&D RPGs like Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, and Dragon Age? This is pretty much it's predecessor, but set in a magical post-apocalyptic world. The Gods are all dead, the world is dying and ruled by tyrannical Dragon-Kings, halflings are vicious cannibals, and you are nothing more than an arena gladiator destined to die for the entertainment of ruling class... well, until you stage a breakout (of which there are multiple routes of accomplishing). I played this game again a few years ago and it still holds up almost two decades later. I'm pretty sure this is abandonware now and will run perfectly on DOSBOX.

chrono trigger is pretty good, its snes but i play it on a pc mod, i never got past a certain point though and i gave up lol cant even remember where it was....
and yes half life was a goodie, (killing scientests ftw!) it was a game that was far beyond its time. also how old is HL 2? cuz that was also pretty good, cept for the bit where you defend white forest base from striders.... that bit was crazy hard, for me atleast....

I own the original retail copy of Septerra Core, bought it the day it came out and... Stopped playing after an hour. For some reason it just didn't catch my attention. It was a clone of Japanese RPGs, but made in the west. As such, it kind of suffered from inexperienced design imo.

Baldur's Gate, Half-Life, Dungeon Keeper, Commander Keen come to mind.
Well, I was lucky enough to get some CD's of really old games for pc, those I enjoyed at the time were the likes of, Monkey Island series (still making new ones YAY), Simon the Sorcerer, Lost in time, Sierras - Kings Quest series (6 in particular - humor very like Dink) Quest for glory/Shadows of Darkness, Bash (a cutsie little side scroller that took up a massive 3 floppy disks wooooooo! So BIG! heh) Broken Swords, quite enjoyed the Lemmings, Last Half of Darkness, Heroes of might and Magic, castle, Aviator, Nethack, pacman, I vaguely remember one called ice and fire - or fire and Ice was awesome haha. So many of the old nostalgic PC ones. Loved Sonic, Alex the kid and so on so when you look at them I uess its no wonder I really like Dink too
Never needed super dooper fancy graphics to enjoy one of those,

Omg, yes! I was gonna say - Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Dungeon Keeper (awsome game), Alone in the dark (DOS ones), Stronghold, King's Quest, The Settlers

I'd buy the worst game of the nineties rather than get all the games of the last decade for free, really.
First game I really liked was Morrowind. I don't think it is that old. But I also enjoyed Half-life series. Btw do anyone know there will be Half-life 3?
There will most definitely be a Half Life 3 (or maybe Episode 3 first), but nobody knows when.
Half-Life 2 Episode 3 will be coming out, but VALVe hasn't set a release date yet.
Grim Fandango, Half Life, THPS3, And HALO PC/Custom Edition are all the "old" PC games I have
"
"
Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Castlevania 64, Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness (The one where you play as the Werewolf), and several other games that I can't think of at the moment.
Really you have Grim Fadango, I am looking for that game for years!
My favourite old games are: Dink Smallwood, Resident Evil 2, Tomb Raider 2.
Too many to count, really.
Doom, Half-Life, old LucasArts adventure games, Finnish indie games from the late 90s, Deus Ex, Betrayal at Krondor, Outcast... Just to name a few. It's really hard to come up with names when there are too many to pick from!
And Dink Smallwood, obviously!

X-COM! Apart from perma-death games, I don't know of any game with such simplistic graphics that feels so intense.
It's weird to see Half-Life as an old game. It's still new in my heart
There are lots of truly old games that I can barely remember unless someone else mentions them first... tie fighter was awesome. And some other games that weren't so bad either.. commander keen, monster bash, jazz jackrabbit, the lost vikings, the incredible machine, kings & space quests (sierra adventure games), monkey island 1 and 2, sam and max, golden axe, theme hospital, maniac mansion, indiana jones games, ff 3-6, super mario kart, mortal kombat, alone in the dark, theme hospital, simcity, sim theme park, day of the tentacle, windows skiing game, windows cat/mouse game, windows pinball game, secret of mana, secret of evermore, super metroid, doom (and the rest.. hexen, heretic, rise of the triad, wolfenstein, duke etc), dark forces, full throttle, earthbound, diablo, command and conquer, quake, fallout 1 and 2, myth, grim fandango, zelda, turok, commandos, alley cat, the dig, jedi knight, lemmings, loom, zak mckracken.. some of those are really old, and some not so old back when games were enjoyable! (or I was young enough to still enjoy almost all games I played)

I used to play Total Annihaliaton, Grim Fandango and KKND2 back in the years.

OMG I loved Rodents revenge haha I still have it on disk
If Dead to Rights was released in 2001, is it old? Then it's one of them. Also, Super Mario 64 was the only good mario game (I hate that fat plumber) and.... House of the Dead 2 and... Tekken 4 (2002) and... Chasm the Rift, a really small and unnoticed game. (1996)
Ooh, and Crash Team Racing!
Ooh, and Crash Team Racing!
I consider games more than twelve-years old... old. Though, I must admit, when a 2000's game turns twelve-years old, I probably won't see it as old, because the games haven't changed that much since then. The biggest changes in video games occured in '98-2000.
I loved "Age of Empires 1", my father bought it on it's release (When I was like 3) and we played it together for years and years, and I also liked the sequel.
Also "Heroes of might and magic 3" is one of the best games I've played.
(Oh and of course the Zelda games, like "A link to the past" and "Ocarina of Time")
You guys might not consider these games old, but for me they are (as I'm younger than most of you).

Ah Crash Team Racing... That ghost of Nitrous Oxide was impossible, only beat him on one stage.
Games more than five years old are considered old by me. Call of Duty 2, God of War, Resident Evil 4... Old. But I think it's mostly cuz tha computah technologeis is rushin' so dang quickly, as computahs are way moar advanced than consoles nowadays. I want WiiU.
Retro goes somewhere '95 and back.

I consider PS3 games really new, PS2 games new, PSX games old and anything beyond that ancient. I gotta say I don't like most games from before PSX. I always thought video games were boring, up until my cousing got PSX in 1997.
Funny... I've been gaming since the Atari 7800 at least, and for some reason I just can't embrace the original Playstation. I think some of it has to do with the very rough-looking 3D.
I, again, think that the PSX brought the best game(s) ever to us. Obviously I wouldn't have began enjoying gaming with it, without the console doing so. xD
Well I'm siding with the SNES and the PC here, but you are entitled to your opinion of course.
I'm of the same mind. My best gaming memories are on the SNES and the PC, with maybe a handful on the NES, Gameboy, and Gameboy Advance. I think it's largely a generational thing.
I don't really think of games of 2001-2005 as old, because they are still a lot like the new ones, except for slight graphics changes. I usually think of pre-2000 games as old but since Dead to Rights was released a decade ago I thought so.
Although Resident Evil 4 is one of my all-time favourites I wouldn't call it old.
And to confess there are few old games I like (except for some SNES and NeoGeo CD ones, 8-bit sounds hurt my ears.)

quiz! more power to you brutha! CTR is a definite classic. all the crash bandicoot games were, some of the new ones let me down a bit actually.
Yeah I meant Rodent's Revenge. Also, I forgot worms, cannon fodder, jill of the jungle, blake stone, prince of persia, and raptor.
For PC games, I find it interesting that Wolfenstein 3D (the first popular first person shooter) only goes back to 1992. The first commander keen was released in 1990. Fallout was 1997! For the NES and SNES on the other hand, super mario was released in 1985, legend of zelda in 1986, mega man and final fantasy in 1987, super mario world in 1990 (same year as commander keen!), and final fantasy 6 in 1994. The NES probably had more classic and genre defining games than the PC during 1985-1990.

It sounds very silly to me when people talk about Resident Evil 4 as an old game. It's like yesterday when I saw it being promoted on TV.
Resident Evil 2. That's the first of RE's that I consider old.

It's being ported all over again to Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. You could almost call it a new game.
What's up with half of the first games I ever played being remade into HD versions? Seriously, Abe's Oddysee, Resident Evil 2, some others I forgot, AND they made a new Duke Nukem. It's great and all, but w00t?!
i recently downloaded a game called little fighters 2... i think its AWESOME!
Hey, I downloaded it 2 days ago too!
And same here skull!
And same here skull!
I downloaded it... 3 years ago. Knew some codes for that game too, getting some awesome characters. Also loved how the mana potions looked like beer bottles. xD
Woohoo! I've just started Final Fantasy 1... hope to churn through the whole danged series... and I hate JRPGs. So help me God. Back in the real world, I've been quite impressed by FF1 GBA edition.
I'm sort of doing that too, but I skipped FF2 because I heard the gameplay was awful. And I'm not bothering to do it in order.
I actually rather liked FF2; the gameplay is just different. Have to wrap your head around a new system where you level skills and abilities through their use rather than through just killing monsters. In that sense, it plays more like the SaGa series.
The only FF games I played were Crisis Core (best) FF3 for iphone (good) and Sissidia for PSP.(abysmal)
i used to have dissidia and crisis core but they both broke one of the things i HATED about ff 10 and the other FF's that had the same system is that you had to battle every 5 seconds while walking along a path >.<
The only FF I ever played/owned was VII, which really sucked donkey balls. I judged the entire series by that game. After seeing videos, oh boy, how wrong I was. The series still don't seem to click with me, but at least the whole series ain't like VII.
was it FF 6 or 8 that had squall in it? cuz i heard that ones a classic.
It was 8. I didn't like that one as much because the story seemed choppy. I kept waiting for it to get going, and then I was at the end. The Guardian Forces also annoyed me at first, but they ended up being useful, because you could do things like assign death to your sword and kill enemies with one hit, if you were at a high enough level.
I hated that game. 9 hours in, and the plot hasn't started. >_>
the other thing i dont like about FF is all the riddles and crap, i never know what the hell is goin on with the story! for instance theres a bit in dissidia when you play as cloud, and you beat sephiroth and then cloud says: "the one i really want to meet is..." and thats it! MEET WHO DAMMIT!!?? that sorta thing happens ALL the time in FF, theres always all this backstory you know NOTHING about!
