Let us save our effort and just lie down and die. 
well, are you sure its an .exe extension? if it's only part of the game (graphics, coding etc) it is unlikely that those things are ever going to be save as .exe's - .exe stands for executable, so it is a "run-able" program.

when it comes to "putting spells/ items in the game", you'll find that it may involve a few motions:
1.) You'll have to place the item/ spell code into game X's STORY folder. Perhaps you'll also have to play around with Dink.ini as well.
2.) You will probably want to associate your new items and spells with new graphics. these will go into your' GRAPHICS directory - same with sound, etc.
3.) If you still dont get it, check out the tutorial that comes with mystery island - I found it to be extremely useful.
