From the screen with the grave, go up until you reach the "edge", and then left(possibly a few further screens...) You should spot an entrance to a cave somewhere at the edge. A wizard lives there, who sells you the spell "Divining rod". It marks quicksand locations in a red hue, and should be cast once upon entering any screen in the *canyon of death*.
