Yeah I used fire too. You can start by going to the bottom of the screen and blasting the core until the fire burst gets close. Then go to the top corners and shoot diagonally at the core. Most of the lightning bolts won't hit you if you're as far up as possible. Make sure to swap sides when the fire burst gets close.
