Yes, that's a common theme of this level - you're so near and yet so far. There are various duck-sized holes dotted around the place - the route is by no means obvious or direct. Keep on looking. You'll get there eventually, even if you have to take a roundabout route. 
I'm quite annoyed to hear that the roaches still lock you as a duck though. I thought I'd managed to engineer the temple so that you couldn't get stuck on any screen. Still, at least it isn't another major bug... I'll just have to fix it in a later update.
