As far as dicking around being a constructive part of the creative process, I have to say that I don't believe that to do be the case.
I didn't mean to say that it was a good way to do things. Just that the short time in which you can finish something after avoiding it for a long time is probably more productive than that same short time right away. But indeed:
The best part is that when you are done with whatever you plan to do for the day you no longer have anything to avoid, so you can do whatever you want during this time.
This is usually the best motivation for me to get to work.
