Animal refers to one of the 6 types of life we know of, the others being plants, fungi, bacteria, archaea and protists. (The last two are often omitted, or replaced with viruses, but they aren't alive.) So no, animal does not, in any way, usually refer to mammals. It covers all polycellular that isn't a plant or a fungus...
