Even though I've been given the option to take the advanced courses many times I've turned them down.
The kind of nerdiness I'm talking about happens in your free time. I'm really asking if people here do intellectual things for fun. School is one avenue for getting into those things, and it was a convenient way to introduce the topic, but we don't really have to be talking about school at all.
What happened with me is that when I got to college, my interests expanded a lot, and now I want to go back and relearn the things I didn't take seriously the first time I learned them, like math. I think that happens with a lot of people.
